Are your models collecting dust?

Recommended Posts

You display your models in open cabinets where they collect dust and more dust? For me, if it don't fit inside my dust free cabinet, then I don't build it. I figure, all the money, time and effort building these little models just to let it collect all that dust and possibly mess the paint job?

I just put some weathering foam strip around the regular cabinet glass doors (not an expensive cabinet) and it keeps the dust out and the little models look always like new. I used to just clean them with a soft brush but got tired of it.

I keep the majority of my models in an unused upstairs bedroom- they still get dusty, but not too bad. You start to notice a fine film of dust on them after a few months. I do dust them off regularly just the same.

Downstairs is another matter- they get dusty in as little as a week. All my models are stored on open shelves- though a handful of my favorites are inside Johan and Lindberg display cases.

Dust free in Arizona ? I don't think so. All mine that are good enough ( in my opinion ) go in one of my display cabinets all which have glass doors. The rest go in a box and in a closet. That darn dust still manages to get in to those cabinets. I guess i could try adding some weather stripping of some sort. May have to try that.

I have a China Cabinet sitting in storage that I could fit all my completed builds in, problem is I dont have room for it in the current house anywhere now.

My wife wanted to buy a China cabinet and I thought I could have a little corner for a few semi trucks, but nope, She says no models allowed.

i build to build not to worry about it after once its built it goes on a shelf and sits there. i also dont build to win awards tho.. after about a a year i'll dust them all off to pretty them up. never had any issues with damage to the paint either.

you could waste more time trying to protect and keep them dust free then you could building and IMHO thats just silly.......plus sometimes when i do that yearly dusting i may decided to tear down and rebuild. my hobby allowance doesn't always allow me to have a stash of unbuilts...

Yeah, I have 3 5-shelf glass display cabinets that came from IKEA years ago. The dust still manages to get in through the quarter inch side and front gaps on the glass doors. Weather stripping :blink:Face slap... Duhhhh.....I was wondering how I could seal up those gaps...!!! I need more cabinets anyway for my 1950's car collection. The plexiglass cases by Carney were recommended, but boy are they pricey. I've been looking around for something to get that will hold A LOT of cars.

All of my finished models are displayed in an Ikea glass cabinet. Since the cabinet does not seal tight all of the models are also in individual clear cases to protect them from dust and damage. I had some out to show a friend that was in town recently and even after 7-8 years for some of them they look freshly finished. After all the time I spend building them I couldn't imagine just having them sit out to die a slow dirt death. I'll never understand how or why anyone would do that.

I have three display cases. This was my first one, a china cabinet that came with my sister's house when she bought it. Didn't want it when she moved so I grabbed it some 25 years ago. It was my main case for years. It's in the model room.

Curio cabinet is home to the Old Kustom Kollection. I found this at the curb for free. A cabinet like this is good for someone with limited space.

The big case. A huge china cabinet that a second hand furniture store couldn't sell. They had sold the rest of the set, and sold me this one for $100. It's in my office on the main floor of our house.

I am about to add more shelves to these cabinets. There is room for an extra shelf between each existing shelf. I have a local glass store I have already had shelves made at. That will double their capacity.

I also have a store display counter case out in the garage to be rebuilt someday. Again, scavenged on big item trash day a few years ago.

You can get display cases free to reasonable. Ask friends or folks who are moving if they have one to get rid of. Check the curb and Craigs List, especially the Free section.

I do the same as Dennis. All my builds go in clear cases and then into my display cabinet. The boxes are pretty cheap using a coupon at Hobby Lobby. I'd rather pay a few bucks to keep the dust off as opposed to dusting my builds and taking the chance of knocking parts off or ruining the finish.

That's exactly what I did.

Remind her that models are now molded in China... Might work! :D

I used to use a small set of open shelves on my formica counter top with a 55 gallon fishtank set on top of the whole display upside down to seal it off. The only problem was getting a model in or out of the display. You had to lift almost 60 pounds of glass straight up a couple of feet, and then put it back the same way. I also wanted to use my snack bar for something else. Eventually, when my Hypancistrus started breeding, I needed the tank to raise the babies. Now, I am looking at some cheap bookshelves and putting plexiglass doors on the fronts with some weatherstripping. Most of my stuff is boxed up for now.

I have 3 pretty decent size display cases. 1st one is over 5' tall and 4' wide and its nearly full with drag car builds. My dad made it and it has the sliding glass doors on it with glass shelves inside ,,,, 2nd one is maybe 4.5' tall by 4' wide, its filled with promos and diecasts and the last one isnt nearly as big at about 4' tall and 2' wide . but its all glass sides and glass shelves. Its curio cabinet my wife bought me for christmas several years ago . That one is where most of the replica stock builds end up.As well as awards my girls have received for sports and school .

So my builds stay pretty much dust free, Although I do take them out for a light cleaning every so often.

I ran out of room a few years back ( before my dad made me the one big case )

So I sold a bunch of builtups I had,,,,,,,,, ,,and I will not be making that mistake again .

And I am rapidly running out of shelf space so I need to start thinking about another display case of sorts in the next year or 2

My wife has 2 decent size curio cabinets with her precious moments stuff in,,If I thought I could get away with it ( not likely and be allowed to live ) I would trade one of hers with my smaller one
