chroming resin parts???

I have a couple resin parts that I'd like to have chromed. I contacted Chrome Tech USA and he told me that he can't guarantee how they will turn out. Has anyone here had any experience with having resin plated?

I just got back a resin bumper from Chrome Tech that I had modified with plastic & some body filler. It came out fine.

I recently called Chrome Tech as well and told him I was sending about 300.00 worth of stuff to be plated, most of which is resin. He didn't seem too friendly and told me the same thing, that he doesn't guarantee resin parts. I assured him that the resin has cured for years and that I have polished the surfaces (where i'm able too) with 2000 grit sand paper.

Everything is sprayed with clear lacquer before the chrome powder is introduced so to me, it shouldn't matter what the part is made of as long as it's smooth and does not "weep" oil like some resins will do.

Little Motor Kar has no problems plating resin parts. They must use a slightly different process because they ask you to rack resin parts separate from styrene. I''m sending them some parts soon.

Do you know what the cost is per tree? Are the tree requirements (size wise) the same?

I have used Chrome-Tech exclusively for plating resin parts over the last twenty years or so. I've always been satisfied with the results. Sometimes a few parts are unusable due to dirt or other contaminants in the plating, but that happens with ordinary styrene parts from time to time also. I stopped using mold release on castings that are scheduled for plating (actually, I no longer use it at all, having replaced the silicone "greasy kid stuff" with ordinary baby powder bought at the "dollar store"). No more having to wash the mold release off of the parts. I do plan to try Little Motor Kar one of these days, but that is not a reflection on Chrome Tech's service or the quality of their work.

I have used Chrome Tech a number of times. He does his best to chrome the stuff. I have had a few that I cast that didn't chrome well and I didn't blame him. I found out what I did wrong and I fixed it. You pretty much have to fully degrease the items and polish them up before hand and the chrome will come out awsome. I have not tried the clear laquer yet.

I have had resin stuff turn out good and bad getting chromed. Bob, from chrome Tech even called me once and said he couldnt stand behind how the resin parts on one of the three trees I sent would turn out they looked to him of poorer quality to him ( which was obvious). The other two trees of resin were chromed perfectly by him. I think it has to do more with the quality of the resin used and craftsmanship

trees are22 bucks each. mine are made out of coat hanger and are 6x8. little motor kar does grear work. plate all resin unlike chrome tech. will have your parts back in about 2 weeks.

Have you considered Alclad? I did a prototype aircraft which had a highly polished wing. I used Alclad chrome over Tamiya gloss black and the finish rivals ANY chtome plated plastic part I've seen. A bottle of Alclad will run about $9, and slightly less for the Tamiya rattle can of black. You can do a bunch of parts for that investment, and you can do them as you need them, without having to round up a sizeable minimum order to ship off.

I just recieved a rack of 29 parts from Chrome Tech that were a mixture of primed resin; unprimed resin; primed plastic,and unprimed plastic parts,and ran the gamut from small Chevy rallye wheel caps to Chevelle bumpers and it was some of the best looking plating I have ever seen . I reccommend Chrome Tech highly.........'Z'

I use Chrome Tech for about any thing that I need done in big stuff, Bumpers and grills.. I have done my own stuff from chassis up to every thing using the Alsa Corp Chrome and love it but the last stuff I needed done is more of the cartoon look or over the top kit chrome so Chrome Tech is doing this project for me.

For Alclad this stuff does not do a true chrome look on bigger stuff like bumpers and rims. Also you can not clear over it or handle it very much or it will rub off...

I do have a friend down in Port Rico that is bring me some of the poweder stuff at the GSL and I can not wait to get that. Simon is turning me on to it plus he can get it over in Mexico when he visits for a lot cheeper price then we can here in the states.
