Erik Smith Posted January 14, 2013 Share Posted January 14, 2013 Been working on the Porsche gasser this weekend. No mid engine on this Porsche - so I cut open the hood. With the help of super glue and accelrator I made adjustments all across the Willys frame - shortened the middle section, shortened the back end, lengthened the front, moved the engine mounts and transmission support. This resin is quite brittle, so rather than thin it down under the windows, I'm going to open up the body and sink the top in. That'll give me more surface area for reinforcing it too. Lots of fit issues glue on chrome that is fragile and attachment points that are difficult to hide. Hinges are looser than..... well you can use imagination for the rest. There's enough parts to build 2 from my preliminary inspection. All have a long ways to go. One hard top one vert twins and totally different? The vert is gonna be a party wagon with some go. Wheels arnt final as I might find something a little bigger. So far its got a scratch built console that runs length of the interior. Seats are from the revell willys street rod kit. Contemplating suicide doors hood and trunk just to complete the party wagon. Here is what the Porsche supplies for a seat/interior: I am trying to use some parts from the original Arii kit - but they suck so bad, I just can't. So...I am making my own interior... I knew I kept all those airplane parts around for some reason. Some sanding and it should clean up fine. This thing has more waves than Hawaii. Maintaining the rocker panels without breaking them is a challenge. Gotta dig up a set of wheels motor and 4 seats. Ron Hamilton Posted January 20, 2013 Share Posted January 20, 2013 Can I get in on this madness? I have a Johan 1966 Rambler American Convertible that needs a rebuilding. I recently picked up this beauty off of Ebay, and it needs a lot of attention. It was hand painted in Testors Metallic Green Enamel with Silver trim from the '60's, and it was glued pretty tight, in that I had to cut it apart. It was a little dirty, and had some holes bored in it for mirror and spotlight installation. The rear panel had some custom trim glued on it at some time. I hope to be able to clean this up. The person who sold it to me sent some pieces from an SC Rambler to make the restoration a little easier. However there are several missing parts, and I have to either find a hood with no hole in it, or fill the hole in this one. I have a complete resin Rambler 6 Cylinder engine from Replicas and Miniatures for it, and I am going to raid my parts box for anything else I need, as I am not able to invest any more funds in this endeavor. Push comes to shove, I may have to cannablize a SC Rambler kit for some parts if I cannot restore some of the over-glued and mis-painted parts on this one. I plan to do a '60's "Day Two" car out of this, which is a street driven car with minimum bolt on accessories.I stripped the paint off of the body, using no chemicals. I had a couple of breakage issues in the body, which I hope that I can fix. All of the scripts and trim will be left on this one, and it will be painted in a close representaion of a 1966 Rambler American Color Combination. I was able to get the exterior paint off, and much of the exterior bodywork done on the Rambler. I made a new tulip panel, as the original one would not come off of the interior tub. I still have to fill the hole in the S/C Rambler hood, and get it in primer, then its on to the interior and chassis. Until next time. Gluebombs Are NOT included in my criticism. I've got this mess of a Ranchero. Belive me, it took every method possible to strip it. There's some yucky corderoy glued onto the seats. No idea how to fix that one...... Then theres this Vicky. Its a "10-footer" Looks great at 10 feet, but the closer you get, UGGH And last, one butt ugly badman. I stripped real nice though. Draggon Posted January 20, 2013 Share Posted January 20, 2013 Looking good Ron. I wanted to build mine as a street car, and make it look un-badman-ish. Left the mufflers, ground away the pipes and added shortys. I'm pretty proud of how it turned out. I spent a lot of time on the awful headers. Painted with metallizer polished aluminum. I ditched the blower for a tunnel ram from AMT's Sierra Grande 4x4. Worked over the fit of the kits firewall, then sprayed grey primer fogged with black and red primer to simulate Zolotone. Lastly the wheels were stripped, sprayed Testors silver, then the outer rims were done in BMF. Holes drilled for valve stems Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
