Toast Posted December 14, 2014 Share Posted December 14, 2014 This is the main project on my bench right now. It is a replica of a friend's car. The actual car has a full C5 drivetrain. The model will not have the full modern suspension so hopefully he never turns it over. ;-P I've been doing a bunch of trimming and scratch building to get the engine set up like the original and the car sitting on the modern wheels and tire. First I reorganized the accessories to match his setup. The original kit setup Moved and added some idler pullies and relocated the AC compressor. The pullies were held in place with tacky glue. New belts were made out of styrene strips. after the plastic weld set I carefully pryed the whole assembly off and was very happy everything stayed together! Test fitting the engine. Needed to take a little off the fender wells to make room for the new engine. On the real car the AC accumulator is tucked in the fender so I cut apart some spare AC lines from a couple old S-10 kits and glued them together so they'll disappear just like the real ones. Toast Posted December 14, 2014 Author Share Posted December 14, 2014 (edited) Painted the engine and put it back together The engine is a combination of parts out of a '98 Camaro and the Corvette C6 kit Brakes off the C6 kit I tried to replicate the hammered look powder coat on the chassis. The first color coat is on. This will have the original chrome and a few carbon fiber accents. Thanks for looking and any comments are welcomed. It's cool how so many boring colors are coming together to look pretty cool. I get to start the carbon fiber decals soon too! Toast Posted December 21, 2014 Author Share Posted December 21, 2014 Hit the bottom floor pan with some body color. Here's where all the different greys add alot of contrast to the under side of the car. Engine is glued into place! I used the '62 Corvette kit radiator and modified the shape and added an electric fan. After touching it up, glued it into place as well. I scrounged the parts bin and found the computer out of a Viper kit. Cut it apart and they should make a convincing setup in the Vette. Body got it's final coat of color. I've never done this many decals on such irregular surfaces so it gets frustrating at times. But the rest of the interior is coming along. I built up the seats with glazing putty to make them more plush than how the kit had them. And the body is decaled and ready for clear! Toast Posted January 4, 2015 Author Share Posted January 4, 2015 With the engine glued to the chassis and the coolant hoses glued in place I test fitted the floor pan one last time. Everything has room! You can see some of the carbon fiber decals that are started as well. The chassis and floor pan are going pretty smooth so far. The interior is starting to be the tricky process. I'm trying to get it as close to the real car as possible so deciding what to replicate, what can be made close with just paint, and what will be left as is are the dilemmas at the bench right now.
