White Freightliner daycab

Recommended Posts

All the builds I'm working on except for one are either restorations of old builds or finishing up projects I started long ago. This is a project I started in 2010 and had to put away a year later. It's pretty far along and since the trailer for it is done, it's time to complete this truck. It's a project I wanted to do for a long time. I had a White Freightliner SD kit and several DD kits. I swapped cabs between the kits and went for quite a few additional details. The daycab will be the focus of this thread. The single axle sleeper tractor will be shown in another thread. The following has been done:

Air line details

The interior is being detailed with photoetch

A Detroit Diesel 6-71 engine has been detailed and will be installed.

AITM 2 hole Budd steel wheels are being used.

The cab has had the headlights lowered

The wind fairing has scratchbuilt supports.

Shortened fuel tanks.

The frame is an inch shorter.

The battery boxes are from the SD kit.

Cab color is pactra RC257 Daytona Yellow. It seemed like a close match for the Ryder yellow. Decals are from an original issue amt Mack Cruiseliner kit.

Next post will show the trailer.

The trailer is AMT's Fruehauf reefer with a few mods. It's a built up I bought off of ebay. I detailed the air system and the reefer unit. Also, I added a side door from a Great Dane dry van kit. The decals come from the original issue of the Ford Louisville Short Hauler kit.

Jim, the cab, as molded, has the headlights sitting too high. There's a red and yellow Freightliner he built and the text he adds to most of his pix explains it pretty well. It wsn't written as an article, just text in his photos.See if this link works. The text in this pic explains it pretty well.

Not much progress to report. I worked on the interior a bit. The quilted upholstery detail was sanded smooth for a more plain appearance. I also threw in a couple of shots to show the grille. It's only a test fit. The grille was part of a photo etch detail set made by Harald Weber. It includes the door handles and window cranks seen in the pic. I'm getting a little further with the frame as well. I'll post more when I can.

I've made a little progress on this one. Engine and wheels are mounted. I decided to use the shortened bumper I made from the kit bumper and save the metal one for another project. Some of the old narrow front bumpers from Freightliner had rounded ends, so I did that with my bumper.
