I don't get it!

You Will never stop it from happening. Just look at the Drag and race cars in Under glass . Harry even you posted in the one race car post in Under class. Where do Race cars go Harry? Mercedes Race Car is the title of the post.Just wondering where race cars go on this board?

That's one of the inherent compromises with how the forum categories are set up, as some models fit into multiple categories. As long as a 1/16 scale Petty NASCAR model is posted in either the NASCAR, Big Scale, or Model Cars: OTW or UG, it's fine. It fits in all of them, not just one.

I know that something has to be top of the page, I would expect that to be the Rules and Guidelines, like usual, but I've just never seen another modeling board that has its off-topic, random BLAH_BLAH_BLAH_BLAH, stream-of-consciousness board at the very top of the page. Maybe make "General" into only posts about cars and trucks either 1:1 or in scale and general modeling topics and make a totally completely off-topic "My hamster died, my cat is sick, I stubbed my toe..." board somewhere down the page? General is just a hot mess as it is. General might as well be Spotlight...

But there are plenty of folks that like that random, wandering, stream-of-consciousness style I'm sure.

Shouldn't this be posted in the ask a question section? after all it is a question :D

...then Greg Myers said:

That was my first question.

-----------------------------------------------

So I just gotta ask...

But, uh, under Q&A it says: "Do you have a specific ....modeling..... question?".

What am I missing here? Does the phrase " Do you have a specific modeling question? " actually mean anything in English, or is it the same as "dfpgpfgkhhgfgpig?". :D

OK, so pickups and big trucks are segregated from each other and then segregated even further from other models. Makes perfect sense now

Lemme see if I've got this right with a few example topics:

Asking where to buy Alclad = General

Asking how to use Alclad = Q&A

Asking which is better, Alclad or Metalizer = General

Asking what is the better shade of Alclad for painting a specific part = Q&A

Coming right out and telling everybody how you use Alclad = Tips & Tricks

Coming right out and telling everybody how much you hate using Alclad = General

Saying "Hey everybody, my hamster died" = General (located at the top of the page of a modeling site)

Saying "Hey everybody, we're having a model show" = Model Shows (located at the bottom of the page of a modeling site)

Saying "Hey everybody, my house burned down" = General (located at the top of the page of a modeling site)

Saying "Hey everybody, my house burned down - but it's where we held our model club meetings" = Model Club News (located at the bottom of the page of a modeling site)

I bought a kit today = Big giant thread on General board

I bought a kit today and took some pictures of the sprues = Car (or Truck!) Kit Reviews

I bought a kit today and took some pictures of the sprues and started working on it and took some pictures of that = On the Workbench

I built a Monogram Little T as a roadster with a turtledeck = Cars Under Glass

I built a Monogram Little T as a roadster with slicks and a number on the side = Drag Racing

I built a Monogram Little T as a roadster with a pickup bed = Trucks Under Glass

I built a Monogram Big T as a roadster with a pickup bed = Big Boyz

Again, I'm no rocket surgeon, but it seems like if you set up a forum ostensibly under the guise of a modeling forum, then take all the time to come up with all these little compartments for different subjects, then your "Ah, screw it, everything that doesn't fit somewhere else goes here" board ends up being the largest and most trafficked board and is given the prominence of being at the top of the page, then maybe you didn't do too good of a job when coming up with all those little compartments in the first place...

There are too many categories here. While it's easy for us that have been here for some time, I can easily see how it could be confusing for a new member. I seriously doubt that people are putting their topics in the wrong places. More than likely, they are just overwhelmed with all of the different categories. It's easy to see how someone could think that their question or whatever could go there. Maybe people do it to get their question answered more quickly since it seems to get the most traffic.

Personally, I like the General section being at the top. It's where I go to first usually. There was a time here when people complained about non model topics being posted in the General section. I never had a problem with it personally. More than likely, I probably started a few non model topics in there myself. I'm also pretty sure that at one time or another, just about everyone here has posted a topic that was non model related in the General section..

I really wish we could go back to the old days of Under Glass when the only qualification was that it was a finished model. Short of that,I think it would work well to have an Under Glass with sub sections like so.

Under Glass with these sub sections

Cars: any car whether it's drag, NASCAR whatever. any scale

Trucks: anything from a pickup to a big rig

Other: anything non automotive or less than four wheels

I would do the same with the Workbench section.

I really don't understand why some groups of people want their own section just because that's all they build. Maybe if they were exposed to other types of builds, they might try something new and actually enjoy it.

Roadmap. Nicely done. Should be in the FAQ section. ;)

The "General" section, whether you personally like it or not, is the single most popular section here. If you don't like the "hot mess" that it is, you already know the very simple solution.

That's the reason why we separate stuff into sections here! So that people who are interested in that sort of thing can easily find it, and so those who are NOT interested in that sort of thing can easily AVOID it.

Makes perfect sense to me, Brett. Don't know why it doesn't make sense to you.

Should be in the FAQ section. ;)

Are you volunteering to help compose a FAQ? Seriously, I think a FAQ would be helpful here, but I fear all the effort we'd put into composing one would be wasted and we'd constantly be telling people to "read the FAQ." Are FAQs a thing of the past? Are they still useful? I dunno.

Adding an FAQ section would be a mess. First of all we would need someone to constantly edit it and remove redundant questions. Then we would have the unenviable task of teaching people to use that section correctly, which from what I see, would be next to impossible!

Okay, so Harry just has to figure out how to warp space and time so that ALL topics will be at the TOP of the page. Simple.

Whenever I go to a restaurant, I always order the first item on the menu. I can't be bothered to look down any further.

Obviously, everything else below that first item is garbage, and not worth ordering. ;)

To all the Whiney-the-pooh's who complain about the number of topics- What's the problem? If you are sitting around on your computer, looking at websites then you obviously have some time to kill so why not look for the appropriate spot? So many people complaining about wasted time and sore thumbs because "WAH! I don't want to scroll down the page to the right spot wah!"

If your time is that precious then why are you here? Why do you build models? I find them quite time consuming as an activity so why? If you don't have the time to look down the page but you have all the time in the world to complain about it, get out. Leave and go bother some other website with your petty whining and complaints about how they should have built the site around you!

I doubt if many people would read it either. People are lazy...

I see no problem with lots of categories, as long as they are clearly defined. Imagine how awful it would be if there were no categories and just one forum with page after page of uncategorized posts and threads...

It would definitely put MCM in the spotlight! :P

Ah, so you've been to the Hyperscale Forum, yes? That place is a mess on top of a mess.
