Anyone Have A Sleep Number Bed? Waaaay OT !

I need to use my "ask the audience" card on this one.

The wife and I have been sleeping poorly on our older mattress. I thought it was just me, but she says she's been waking up aching and not sleeping well at all. I tend to sleep on my left side and my shoulder hurts. I try to sleep another way but I always wake up that way hurting. I believe it's the bed since I will sleep better in a motel.

We saw that Sleep Number had a 50% off sale on a specific model of bed this weekend so we went up to the mall and got a demo. It's decently impressive, and may help us sleep better and feel better. The bed is way expensive, and can be had two ways.. one being a flat bed, and the other version has the ability to raise and lower your head or feet, which doubles the cost.

Soooo, just looking for opinions from all fronts... anyone have one? Like it? Hate it? Have the flat version or swear by the one that raises and lowers?

Thanks!

Tom, we have a Sleep Number bed. Does not incline. Queen size. It does everything it says. My wife and I definitely have a different number. Here is something to think about. If you hurt your back, you can adjust the bed to make it more comfortable. Same for your wife. I am guessing she is beyond child bearing years... B) ....but it is a thought for someone else reading this. You can change the bed as you gain or lose weight, (through pregnancy or too much ice cream).

Here is my dislike. We have two separate chambers. They are divided with a firm foam frame around each chamber. If you are at 100 and your wife is at 20 and you roll over, it will feel like you are falling out of bed. If opposite it will feel like you are rolling into a wall. Kinda, sorta. Point is you will notice the difference in the chambers. This also makes for a smaller sleeping surface. Does that make sense? If you have a queen sized bed you, (or your wife), will not have a queen sized area, (for your number), to sleep on.

Hope this helps, Tom. Let me know if you have any other questions.

We've had a sleep by number bed for thirteen years and love it! The best thing about it is we can adjust the firmness depending on the need for comfort. I'll soften it a bit if my muscles and joints are sore from a long days work to get a good nights sleep and minimal pain in the morning. It's a flat matress with the corded controllers extended queen size that fits perfect in our bedroom and gives both of us enough room. The tricky thing is finding sheets. Not a common size but available on line. The sleep by number store carry them but can be a bit pricy! I highly recommend it and the wife and I agree worth every penny it cost!

My Sister called back and says they love their sleep number bed. They have the flat bed . She likes it because they both like a different number to sleep on. She has had three other people buy them because they have given rave reviews . As mentioned above she says make sure to get the dual chambers. She also said do not go down in size you will regret it (her in laws did). They wished they would have stayed with the King . She also warned it may take a few weeks to get your number right.

We have a sleep by number bed and love it! It's the king size model, does not recline. My wife ordered it from QVC. We had tested one at a sleep by number store and loved it but, thought it was way too expensive. I think she paid about $600. The special sheets are for the reclining model and are quite expensive because they have to split about half way up. We use normal sheets. Our sleep numbers are way different. I have had back problems for most of my life and the bed helps ease this problem.

I like the fact that the whole bed is light weight and can be moved around with ease. The mattress is basically an air mattress and therefore easy to keep clean without the worry of dust mites or bed bugs. lol That's just the way I think.

We have been sleeping on ours for several years with no problems. Previously we had owned over eight different mattresses none as good as this one. I am sold on sleep by number! I do not own any stock in the company, I swear.

I hate it. Worst bed I ever slept in. King size, non reclining. It's stuffed in my closet. We use to have a full size and upgraded to a king. Not for us.

I'm 31 with a bad back. The sleep number made it worse. We have a temper pedic in the guest room and I use that when I get really bad

We bought a new premium box spring mattress and it's been great.

From what I have read over the years is that some people just don't like the sleep number while others swear by it. TEST it thoroughly. It's essentially a top quality air mattress.

The problem with the king is it uses dual air bladders, so there is a dip in the middle. I am 6'3" 250 and I take up a lot of real estate. I can't sleep without going at an Engle or moving around during the night, so take that into consideration

Many thanks to everyone who chimed in about the Sleep Number bed. As a result we ordered a king size one today, 50% off sale on the top model! We didn't get the one that raises and lowers, that doubles the price, so we went with the flat one.I am hoping this will be a big improvement in our sleeping! :) Heck, I've bought good running cars for less than we paid for this bed.

Like many here we got tired of buying expensive beds that only lasted a few years. Bit the bullet and bought the sleep number bed and have never looked back. For myself I have back issues from an injury when I was young. I'm able to adjust the bed to offset any issues I may be having at any given time. Its a lot of money, but well worth it in the long run.

Thank you David! I have ordered the bed and am awaiting a delivery date in the next few weeks. We are excited since neither my wife or I have been sleeping well, or through the night, on our current 10 year old mattress. I tend to sleep on my left shoulder, and I wake up with it aching on a regular basis. I have noticed that I sleep better in motels than at home, so I believe the bed will help me. In fact, I fell asleep on my comfy couch last night and stayed there for the night. No shoulder ache this morning!

I had one for awhile about 10 years ago - the young lady in the relationship kept it - ^THAT was the problem that I had with it. It's perfectly fine so long as everyone is in bed together, but as soon as one or the other of you get up - presuming you have different enough schedules that one of you will be in bed for more than a few minutes. But once the person with the lower sleep number gets up and leaves, the person with the higher number is going to fall a few centimeters to their death. Like John says the first couple of times it does feel like you're falling out of bed entirely. The other downside is that the thing airs up with what amounts to a vacuum cleaner motor, it's not exactly the quietest thing in the world. So again if you're going to bed at separate times (I stay up late - hence the nickname) 9 out of 10 times you're going to wake up your bed mate resetting your number when you lay down.

The quick and dirty remedy to keep from falling to your doom is to adjust the other bladder up (or down) to your same number when they leave, and then the bed is level. Of course the other person will have to re-adjust their bed every night.

On the positive side I LOVED that bed, I slept really well on it - so long as only I, or both of us were in it. The mornings where she worked, but I had off-days from being OTR I tumbled off my side into lower number oblivion eventually.

Thanks James-

People had mentioned a few shortcomings of the bed to me and I actually shared this thread and other information I got with the salesman. They have addressed many of the concerns in newer versions of the bed. For instance, as we tried out the beds in the showroom, the compressor is now silent. We also have a few airbeds in our house that have super noisy built in compressors. I slept on one of those for the year that I lived in PA prior to my wife coming with our furniture. I actually will leave our rock hard bed and sleep the rest of the night on the air bed which we have in a guest room. Those nights when I wake up with my shoulder aching, it provides great relief. That experience had me liking the airbed feature of the Sleep Number bed.

The air bladders are pretty much separate now and don't affect the other sleeper. It's almost like two twin beds on a common frame. And someone mentioned that there was a no man's land in the middle that had a hard ridge. That's been fixed too. The salesman stripped down the bed and showed me the inner parts.

So I'm really looking forward to this. Yea, it's a $8000 bed, which I bought on a half price Labor Day Sale, so I've got a hair under $4000 invested. But that's nothing next to our comfort and health for years to come!

No matter what a person is shopping for, the salesperson is going to make the item sound REAL good just to make the sale. While my back is not the greatest, I do get a pretty good nights sleep and I can't justify spending BIG bucks for a mattress. Years ago we've had a waterbed that we liked and had it for several years.
