1950's Cadillacs and Mercurys on EBAY

Recommended Posts

Other than '57, '58 & '59 Cadillacs, there are rarely any earlier Caddys that show up on EBAY except for a couple of warped promos. I never see any Mercurys other than 1959 promos or builtups.

Does anyone know if any other Caddys or Mercs from the 1950's were ever made in either kit or promo form in 1/25 scale? I know that Modelhaus makes a '50 & '56 Caddy, and '56, '57, '58 and '59 Mercs.

The same seems to be true for Buicks, Oldsmobiles, Plymouths and Pontiacs. Modelhaus makes a few from the late 50's, but nothing from the earlier 50's years.

The pickings are really scarce for these cars from 1950 through 1954. I also know that WHEAT has a bunch of promo stuff but I can't afford his prices and I won't buy anything that is warped.

I just took a quick look and you are correct. There are the AMT 1951 Chevys and 1949-50 Fords, a 1950 Mercury snap kit, the recent 1950 Olds, Moebius 52-3 Hudsons, AMT '53 Studebaker, Revell and Monogram 53-4 Chevys. And there's the Lindberg 1953 Ford. The original warping promos were the only thing actually produced back in the early 1950s, there weren't any kits so everything of that era are historically created models as these I listed above.

There is resin. Off the top of my head I have a R&R 1950 Plymouth 4 door sedan. A pretty poor effort but the only show in town. I just checked eBay and the supply of R&R seems to have dried up. I saw many second hand resin kits being sold at the last swap meet I was to, so they're out there.

Hendricks also does some interesting 1950s resin including a 1957 Plymouth wagon. They are on the 'bay. Jimmy Flintstone has a few conversions.

Another source is diecast. Both Franklin and Danbury have done subjects not seen as kits. I'd watch the 'bay for damaged ones if you want to take them apart to do your own way.

I'm sure you know, there were no "kits" made prior to 1958. before that it was all promos, whether plastic or metal or a combo of the 2. They were few & far between & the plastic as you know was horrible. X-EL did a couple of repops of prior to '58 promos such as the '57 Olds, but other than that, finding unusual subjects from before '58 in restorable condition will be either be resin or something you probably wouldn't want to spend 25 cents on. Thanks for the replies guys.

I pretty much have all of the kits in my stash or have already built some of the Chevy's Fords, Hudsons, Olds and Studebaker that Tom mentioned. I'm aware that some promos were made in that warping acetate and I don't go near those. I have gotten and rebuilt a few of the ones made with the Cycolac plastic which is less susceptible to warp. I've also bought and will buy more eventually of the Modelhaus' offerings as finances permit. I've had bad experiences with R&R's stuff so I usually stay away from those. Hendrix has a '51 Pontiac and a few others that I've looked at but I haven't bought from them yet mainly due to the fact that none of their stuff comes chromed. I have yet to buy and use Alclad in a spray can as I don't have an airbrush.

I'll keep searching EBAY and vendor tables at shows for the elusive cars.

Banthrico made metal 1/25th promos of the Cadillac 4-door sedan from 1952-1955. The '54-'55 windows look more accurate than on the '52-'53. A few years ago, a metal pre-painted '53 Eldorado model was made. The box said it was 1/24th and 1/26th scale on different sides, so maybe it's 1/25th  . Some of the early AMT models have no warp, while others are terrible, and I'm referring to the same model year of a given model car. Be patient and you will find them. Banthrico made a metal '54 Mercury, and I think they also made '50 and '51 models.
