Hello, Going To Mod 1/12 Vette, a Few Questions For You Guys...

Hello Gang,

I'm new to the forums, I've been milling around here for the last couple of

days checking out everyone's creations, and learning as much as I can. I

must say, there are a lot of incredible modelers here!

The last model car kit I built was probably around 25 years ago or more.

In fact, if memory serves me correctly, the last project I was working on

was my Monogram 3n1 1/12 scale corvette!

Believe it or not, I actually still have that kit, and I am getting ready to go

back to work on it again.

I had and still do have, big ideas for this kit, so I did some searching around

online the last few days to see if I could find another one of these for sale

somewhere. I actually just missed one that sold on eBay a couple of days

ago that was still new in the box. ARRGGGHH!!! Well, actually now that I

look closer, it looks like it was sold in mid June, but still very close as that

goes. The thing only sold for $28.52 as well !!! Man oh man... I know I paid

more than that for mine 25+ years ago new in the store. Someone got a

sweet deal on that, for sure.

Anyway, I have a few questions I'm hoping a few of you guys might be able

to answer...

First off, is there any place online that sells 1/12 scale parts and accessories

for these larger scale models? I can't seem to find any place yet.

Next, I was thinking that maybe it might be a good idea to go ahead and

make a few molds from the parts I have, seeing how there doesn't seem to

be many of these kits around any more?

Okay, I have another question(s) about some kit bashing ideas I have...

Since I've owned this kit, I have always had the big idea that I was going to

do away with the factory floor pan (tub) and stuff, and create a scale like tube

chassis for this car.

The problem I'm having is that I'm not sure how one would go about gluing or

"welding" the tube chassis together?

I want to use scale 1.75" aluminum tubing for this. I thought that maybe the

best bet would be to use something like JB Weld to glue the tubing together.

If done correctly, it should look like real welded joints. But I'm sure you know,

that JB Weld is a very, very slow drying glue.

Has anyone here ever created a "real" metal tube chassis before? If so, what

and how did you go about doing it successfully?

Also, keep in mind that I am going to want to also create the interior out of thin

aluminum sheet just as we would do when building the real thing.

Okay, well that's my first couple of problems I need to get solved, I'm sure

there will be more as I move along on this project. I really appreciate any help

and advice you guys might be able to offer me.

I'm building the 1/12 57 to with plastruct styrene a little ez to work with, i think but what do i know. I'll be looking in on your build.
