It was created years ago and I think that the Revell guys did a good job. http://www.truckin24.de/03c1989d840f69e01/03c1989e1510fe103.html There are some differencies from the real truck though. Unlike the kit, Clydes II has extended hood. Unfortunatelly, I have never seen any picture of this truck with the hood opened. I was positive, that the truck was powered by 8v 3408 CAT. But then, just yesterday, I found this note on public fotki... http://public.fotki.com/modeltrucks25thscale/truckkit_instructions/revell/07522_peterbilt/ Now I am uncertain, which engine I should use for the model. I was looking forward to installing 3408 in the 359 frame. Now it seems to be wrong. "Papa Clyde", the successor of "Clydes II" has the twin-turboed 3408, that is for sure. Maybe that´s why I thought that the 3408 was in the older truck too. Anyway, I started the hood extension. I had two short hoods, one of them cracked badly. I cut the damaged hood to pieces and used its parts for extension. I cut the hood along the spinal stripe to compensate for the changed angle of the hood sides. But the change is so small, I could have omitted this step just as well. But I made a mistake and extended the hood less than I intended. I had to repeat the process all over again. Another possibily was to reposition the cab backwards. But I like the frame extension better... The joint will secured by a metal stripe. I've build this model a long time ago and Claus saw it on the Intermodellbau in Dortmund, I believe it was the year 2000. I do not know what the book shows but, could you tell me what color the engine is. Beige, white, metalic grey... ? Are there some chrome elements in the engine compartment? truckabilly Posted September 2, 2011 Author Share Posted September 2, 2011 (edited) Well, I continued with my research and addressed Klaus Lassen (thanks for the tip, Hessel). Klaus sent me a rock solid evidence that in 1993 the unit 402 called Clydes II was powered by CAT 3408. This makes it possible for me to carry on according to my initial plan. I already started working on the CAT 3408 using the old Ken Smith articles for detailing. The parts of the engine are base colour painted. They are not very accurate but I can live with that. I just hope it will look better after the paint. I added a line of rivets along the fender. I made them out of Evergreen plastic rod .020" inserted in the holes and cut along the hood surface. All the chassis parts require an endless job of filling and sanding... filling and sanding... filling and sanding... Have I forgotten something? Yeah, filling and sanding! Still not positive that the engine in Bill Signs unit is of the same color as the truck. But it is painted already. I used GSI 28 lightened by a drop or two of white. I added the plumbing and reworked the belts and puleys. Not a 100 % accurate but it is my first try. Here is a few mock-up shots of the engine in the frame. It is not the exact type that Clydes II has but it is quite common in Peterbilts, if I can judge. Anyway, it is the best I could come up with. These pics show the progress. I finally sprayed the major parts of the truck using GSI colours "C" line. The shade appears much lighter on the pics than it actually is. The real truck looks pretty dark on some photographs and then quite light on some others. I tried to come up with something in the middle and I think I achieved that. But the colour reveals each and every fault, each and every scratch and imperfection. The stripe on top of the hood looks really bad. You know that I extended the hood twice. I think it´s okay on the skin, but I just could not align the stripe and every trial to make it look better ended up in worst and worst condition. Well, here I am, kinda helpless...
