VIPER MX7! Viper-X-Wing Jet Racer... Finished!

Recommended Posts

VIPER MX7!

The MX7 is made from the Colonial Viper and the Big MPC X-Wing Fighter. The Viper was a Glue Bomb from the 70's, but it came apart very nicely. I will be using the Viper Engines and the main body, with the Detailed Cockpit, from the X-Wing.

Here are the Viper Engines. The top center Intake is right behind the Cockpit. Seems like a loud and dangerous position...

I am going to build the Viper MX7 with the Engines up-side down, like this...

BODY TOP!

After some fitting and measuring I marked the rear sections to be removed.

Next I cut off the sections with a cut-off wheel.

TAILFIN!

I decided to use the Viper Tailfin on the X-Wing Body. I cut 2 plastic strips to fit the recessed area and marked the spots where I will be cutting slots for the Tailfin.

DSCN7627V_zpsba223851.jpg

I used a cut-off wheel and cut out the slots.

Then I glued in the plastic strips and opened up the slots a little more.

A LITTLE TOO WIDE!

The sides of the X-Wing Body cover parts of the upper intakes. So I decided to sand down the areas to make them fit. I also glued a small rectangle of plastic inside the area so I can Grind them down further.

Here is the right side area after grinding & sanding.

NOSE JOB!

I glued the X-Wing Body halves together and then I cut off the Nose. The new Nose is a lot like the Viper Nose.

Here is the X-Wing Front and the Viper Rear glued together. The body fits around the Intakes much better now.

NEW WING SHAPE!

I decided to make Wing Extensions to connect the Viper Wings to the X-Wing Body. I cut these little ends off the Wings.

DSCN7915V_zps49224a98.jpg

I made a Template from file card and traced the shape on to sheet plastic.

Here are the Plastic Wing Extensions.

DSCN7920V_zpse5c93c43.jpg

Here they are glued to the body only. I will glue the Wings to the Extensions next.

FILLIN' & FITTIN'...

After adding Plastic Shims and doing a little Bending, I got the Wings to line up just right. Then I glued them in place with Zap-A-Gap.
Here you can see how shims were used to fill in and make the Body and Engine Unit fit together Nice & Tight!

TAILFIN FINS!

I decided to extend the Tailfin. I made File Card Templates for the Extensions and then traced the shapes on to plastic and cut them out. I glued them in place with Zap-A-Gap.

Here is a the front Extension in place.

Here is the rear Extension in place. I am having second thoughts about this little Extension. I might remove it and add a larger Extension later...

BLENDING IT IN!

I cut a piece of plastic to fit between the X-Wing and the Viper Bodies. After a little sanding and fitting I glued it in place.

DSCN7957V_zpscd5eac3c.jpg

Next I cut and fit a couple more plastic pieces and glued them in place.
