Utility 3000R Reefer

Recommended Posts

I decided to try my hand at building a Utility reefer rather than a Great Dane. The Great Dane reefer does share a lot in common with the Utility version, so the Moebeus Great Dane reefer was an obvious place to start. First thing I did was made a Carrier refrigeration unit to replace the Thermo King that comes with the kit:

More to come soon.

Looks great, so far.....I agree that the Utility's and the GD's are almost identical....I really have to get close and look for the logos to tell them apart....Great idea....I'm about to get onto a GD, myself.....Without the refer, this time and with aero skirts.....I'll be starting that middle of next week.....I'll be watching this one, though, for sure.....

These are really a great kit, this is the second one that I am building (I kept the other one as a Great Dane though). I'll keep an eye out for your build, the side skirts will look great on it. Let me know if you want some super single tires to go along with it: http://kdhumphr.wix.com/double-take-replicas#!super-single-tire/cox2

You need to cast this.

I already have, this piece is actually a resin cast piece. I need to add a little draft angle to the fins so that it comes out of the mold easier. On the third piece I damaged the mold, so now I am adjusting the master and will remold it. I will have it available through my website soon.

Well you are up there in the home of Carrier.

Go Orangemen!

Yup, they levelled the old carrier plant and turned it into a park a couple years ago. Everything is made outside of the US nowadays.

I got a little more work done today, made a set of rear doors for it. I went with some diamond pleating, and of course the signature Utility off-center door cams.

I've seen Jamie Groeneweg's models before, he does amazing work. Especially considering that this picture is a 1/87 scale model!

Making the quilted doors from scratch is not too difficult. I use styrene sheet that has a tile pattern on it, then cut it at a 45 degree angle so that the pattern will look like diamonds. Once I finish the doors I use bare metal foil and scrub it with a toothbrush to get the foil down in all of the spaces between the diamonds. I did the same thing on my great dane and it worked out really nicely:

It's starting to look like a trailer! I scratch built the landing gear to be more Utility-ish. I also added some light weathering to make it look like it has just finished pulling it's first couple loads. I still have to finish up the details on the front and add all of the marker lights.

Oh, yeah....That looks great.....The reworked landing gear is beautiful......Love the decals, too Man.....Everything looks like it came together pretty good.....Any shots of the refer attached??

Thanks. I don't have the reefer on the front yet. I'm still working the front end to make it more like a Utility. I'm hoping to have it done in the next day or two. I still have to finish the front and get all the marker lights on.
