Here are two more scout's First is a 1980 which was the last year of production and the second is a scout terra pickup, Maybe ertl could have produced both?

this kit can actually be built up rather nicely with some minor extra details, i'm going topless with one trying to make a "rallye" version

i'd love to be able to make a custom travell all hatchback top (fiberglass) we have a 1980 in the family with the 345 ci big block (biggest for IH) light truck division

1980 was the last year of the truck as well...... they should never have quit making light trucks and suv's awell it in the history books

a revamp of the last issue of the kit combined with older issues of the kit would be awsome!! you out there listening round 2 ??

I know what you mean, I wished they would have made the Scout Traveler as well. An 1980 scout is a easy conversion to do by just changing the grill and the head lights. Ertl did have several scout kits out which included Super scout , off road, and ralley. The topless door less one was the super scout, a rear kit indeed to find.

Very nice especially the red one. I like the old Ertl Scout kit. Daniel Conway mentioned that the 345 was International's biggest V8. Maybe in 1980. But, IH also offered their own 392. Same basic block as the 345. And at one time offered AMC's 401 in their big pickup trucks too.

did the travalall also have a slightly different wheel base? longer by a tad perhaps?

I know our 1980 has a white fiberglass removable top with a hatchback liftgate in the rear........

the truck is forrest green and has the multi coulored green various shades scout spear stripes (remind me of fords "laser" stripes on the torino's)

a few years before my grandfather passed he got the scouts green paintwork redone (probly saved the truck from rusting away (minnesota) the fun task will be trying to find where my grandfather stashed the new scout decals i bought while i was in iraq and had them shipped to the scout...... No scott the truck is not for sale even though it sits beside my grandparents garage in (Richfield ) a sub city of minneapolis) :) pm me if ya wanna chat sometime with this misplaced minnesotan.....

I wonder if your thinking of the Scout Traveler? Which replaced the full size pickup based Travelall. The first photo here is a '69 Travelall.

The second photo here is the Scout Traveler.

All Scout models were smaller than the Travellall. But the Scout Traveler and the Scout Terra pickup truck were longer than the regular Scout II. The Ertl model is a regular Scout II by the way.

WOW! Nice builds Rick!! You do not see many Scout models out there at all. I can see why now - you bought most of them. :P:D Seriously though, they look good and I have aways liked those older Internationals. A friend of mine had a gray coloured one that he called "The Sprout" and he had a blast with that tlittle truck for many years. It was dependable and faithful beyond belief and those things are well built and tough - almost military grade hardware.

As for inaccuracies in the Terra - I've seen more glaring errors on factory released kits, so don't feel bad. Personally, and with all due respect, I think that we should look more at the positive and good aspects of a build rather than what we do not happen to like or see wrong. I mean, aren't we supposed to be here to encourage one another and help? I think that as "it's the thought that counts" applies in real, everyday life, I suggest that in modeling, "it's the effort that counts". or am I missing something here?

I just added this blade from the revel GMC pickup kit to a scoutII, If you look closer at the grill it's close to a 74/75 grill. something I did to it to change model year's as the scout body never changed from 71-80.

BTW my Uncle worked at Harvester's Scout Factory in FT. Wayne Indiana.

thats it scott the 2nd pic the fiberglass hardtop has slightly longer rear windows with the smooth sweep, and the liftgate has more of a slopeing angle , vs. closer to straight up and down of the regular scout II's

so can the kit grille be turned into a 1980 style?

the only other IH questions i promise :)

the wheels on the truck we have look like turbine "mag" wheels, but i want to say they are actually steel? wheels with some sort of special cover thats rubbery? that looks like an aluminum mag wheel really bizzare you can grab hold of the spokes and wiggle them.......

the grille too seems like its some sort of flexible plastic its been many years since i've seen the truck so my memory is a bit fuzzy....

Daniel, Yes indeed the grill and head lights can be changed on this kit First cut out the grill leaving the center bar intact. then cut out the head light openings and replace with square lenses. You do know that IH had 2 different grill's in 80? both have the center bar but one has small black openings while the other didn't.

Scott, you showed a lot here but I'll add a few details....

DSC00089-vi.jpg

Scouts kinda rusted... here's one from New Jersey....

DSC00094-vi.jpg

I believe this is a Scout Traveler with the longer wheelbase. I've collected up a bunch of the most recent Scout release to stretch one of these. Same lot as the first one only they haven't made this flat round.

Scary rust!

travelall4-vi.jpg

Here's the larger Traveler, I believe this one was in Virginia, just to show that rust doesn't discriminate. This one's roof looks ready to peel back at speed.

Anyone recognize this one? It's on my long list of models that need to be built
