Revell '70 Mustang Mach I

Here's what I have been able to find out, and the news is VERY good:

The kit will be parts additions to the existing Boss 302 model, and can be built either as Boss 302 or Mach I.
New separate rocker panels with reliefed Mach I logo and ribbing.
Two engines, Boss 302 and all-new 428 CJ.
Two hoods, plain with optional scoop or SHAKER (YAYYYYYYYYYYY!).
Decals MAY (I supplied R-M with references) include the striping and logos for the Twister Special version.

All I can say is, bring that puppy on!!!!!!!!!!!

Great news!! Will the grille have the "sport lamps" molded in, or will they be seperate parts? I wonder if a '69 fastback body with a proper nose will ever see the light of day...

Brian, thats one question I should have asked...!

As for fixing the '69, hoping for Revell to do it notwithstanding, I've often wondered why the resin casters out there haven't addressed that issue. (P.S. to the resin casters: you still can, you know!)

Mike,

Link to what? ;)

Pros: The 1/24th Boss 429 body is scaled beautifully, looks great from any angle and seems perfectly rendered. Heck, even the hood dosn't fit right just like the real car!

Cons: Grill is not recessed deep enough. Front suspension is way too simplified.

I have built two of these Boss 429 kits, modified actually... Built one into a Boss 302 before the kit came out and the other into a 1969 GT Convertible (pictures of which are buried somewhere in this forum). For a resin caster to make the correct parts for a conversion means that the master maker needs, NEEDS, NEEDS to have the car in his garage to get the shape of the headlights and grill correct. I owned one for 7 years and still messed up my conversion with my scratchbuilt front end.

Other corrections for conversion are the entire exhaust system has to be converted, front chin valance corrected, the rear shocks corrected, the front fender braces converted from one piece to two and of course the taillights/panel changed. Oh and the seats are wrong for 1969 as well or so I believe....

Amen to that...I probably have the world's largest collection of the original issue 1/32 scale Monogram 70 Mach 1's(molded in blue with stock stripes and shaker..!). Just let me know when I can fill up that car hauler semi I have!

Hwy 61 1/18th 1970 Mach 1 diecast should be out soon also...

Sounds good so far, but I'm guardedly optimistic until I see a correct grille and an effective solution to the taillight panel differences between the two.

Wish Revell would take the yawn-worthy '99 Cobra and turn it into an '03 Mach I.

I agree on both counts!

If the Mach is the base 351, the standard rear valance would be correct, any other optional engine would get the cut-out valance with chrome oval exhaust tips. A complete new part would be the best solution with the honeycomb panel and pop open gas cap. Lets see..wheel covers, grille, standard scoop, shaker, engine parts, door panels, seats, possibly the exhaust system, quickly adds up to quite a few parts! Don't forget about the Mustang emblems above the Mach trim on the front fenders! I guess this and the trunk Mach 1 letters will give the photoetch guys something to sell! Wouldn't a photoetch grille be something excellent for this car??

I really miss my 1:1 2003 Mach! Azure Blue, automatic ran 13.47 bone stock with just over 10k on the odometer...

If I start converting a 99 Cobra kit to a Mach, the probability of getting a 2003-2004 Mach kit goes up greatly!

From what I gather from last week's iHobby show is that it is a stock 351, not a 428. I didn't get too many details, the builder of the Mach I said the production hood scoop would be much better than what was seen on his boxart buildup at the show.

A friend of mine Eric Cole, also on this forum (Eric C??) has an Azure blue '03 w/5 speed that I've driven several times. Fun car, much faster than a stock GT. If nobody else does a Mach I conversion we may attempt it; the hardest thing to figure out are the wheels. We're hoping someone else comes along w/more time and fewer projects and makes it easy on us so we can just buy a resin conversion. Or hope that Revell makes it in styrene so we save some serious time and $$.

Bob,

I actually started to work on set of '03 Mach 1 wheels which I never finished...I used Some Pegasus wheels instead for my conversion. Here is a pic of the completed car. Maybe I'll blow the dust off of the wheel and finsh it.

Larry,

I've got the problem solved and am VERY close to having a corrected body ready to be cast. The head light doors, front fenders and and grill assembly have been redone....I've shown it (in primer) To Ed Sexton and he agrees that this has solved the problem(s). I will probably release 3 different versions....1969 Boss 302 both street and Trans Am race version and Mach 1/GT. The trans kit will include...body, seperate front end and grill but I may add more. The Trans Am race version will include many items to make it easier to produce a correct T/A car....look for it on my new web site which will be re-launched this January with the 1969 Mustang released some time this spring.

Dan can you post here when the website is back up and when the 69 Mustang Transam is ready? Also will you be doing any of the Trans Am decals?

My '70 Mach I arrived yesterday and I've had a chance to give the kit a once-over. I think you'll all be pleased with what Revell has done here.

The kit is based on the Boss 302, and all parts and decals are here to build that version if you so desire. All-new parts include:

  • New 351 Cleveland engine
  • New radiator tank top
  • New interior shell with separate side panels and new 2-piece bucket seats (upholstery pattern different from the Boss 302/Boss 429 parts)
  • New five-spoke simulated alloy wheels (similar to those found in the AMT/MPC '71 Boss 351 but nicer)
  • New rear fascia panel with textured detail between the taillights
  • New hood with separate open functional hood scoop (NOT shaker!) and separate inset chromed hood "twist locks"
  • New chromed grille with rectangular parking lights
  • New chromed lower rocker panel trim with ribbing and Mach I logos
  • Superb decal sheet with black and white striping, woodgrain interior inlays, scripts, and gauges

I'll have a full critical review of the kit in the next issue of MCM.

Sounds great Larry!

Okay, I gotta ask though.....................Did they correct the shape of the headlight trim where it's not so thick and the corresponding too tall grille?

That's the only thing that bugged me about the previous '70 releases is fixing that where it's more in line with the 1:1. ;)
