Quick Build: RIP….

Nice Chevelle! Love those Colonade bodied GM's! Stock eliminator? What's she running? I haven't had the pleasure with mine yet.

Thanks. Yep it's a Stock Eliminator Drag Car with 350 SBC & TH-350 automatic trans. So far the best ET is 12,369 with 106mph top speed. For the next season, we'll change the final gear ratio from 5:13 to 5:38 and hopefully that will improve the ET...

Here is a video of me driving in my first race. That race ended up in break out, despite that I hit the brakes before the finishing line...

I like your cars Bob. When I was a kid I had a `68 383-S 4 spd. and it was WAY too much car for a 17 yr. old!

<sigh....> Hind-sight is always 20-20. If I ever decide to re-do my car, big bolt pattern wheels w/ 4 wheel disc's would be up there with a Tremec 6 spd. conversion.

Anyway, before we get bounced to the off-topic section, today the hobby room get's some love, then we can start with the activities. Chief Joseph's resin drag radials are absolutely beautiful and fill the wheel wells out nicely. Hopefully I'll have some mock-up's tonight.

Niko, I'm hoping mine runs that well. I haven't run it at the track yet, but I am tempted to find a deserted stretch of late-night highway with my G-Tech meter and see.....

Wow.... running out of steam. I can't crank away 7 days a week anymore like I used too.

I got the hobby room in much better order today. Never touched the actual workbench.... but got the room in order. Now when I clean the bench, I have space to organized and put away everything that's out now. The part that always makes me cringe is vacuuming. No matter how many times i get down on the floor with a flashlight and look, I roll the vacuum across the floor and it always sounds like I'm sucking up a 1,000 BB's. I have visions of half of the Model Car Garage's catalog going up the tube....

I'm going to try and drag my sorry old butt upstairs and have at it later. I really want to get this going!

In another post I mentioned I found another can of MCW Turquoise Metallic stashed away. I also have the roached-out `67 fastback interior/chassis donor ready for some attention.

<sigh....> Just let me sit in the recliner for a few minutes....

Can't wait to see the pics of your mock up with those wheels.

Here's the rolling stock. Rims are Replicas & Miniatures Hot Rod wheels, the `67-8 Plymouth dog dish hub caps are from Arrowhead Machine, front tires the parts box, and those beautiful drag radials are from Chief Joseph.

And here she is propped up. If you squint real hard.....

I still have to figure out my bench seat, I have the interior bucket & chassis (such as it is) to throw it together.

Nice project and nice cars. Around 96 I had a 68 383/4 speed S notchback. Should have kept it. It had been a drag car all it's life. 4 k miles on a perfect rust free body. Springs moved inboard so it had lots of tire under it. I got it as a roller and installed a decent 383/727 combo. Had 488 gears. Fun car.

The stars have aligned and the powers that be are smiling down upon me. My Modelhaus order arrived today

post-222-0-77772900-1387242954_thumb.jpg

And here's the corn cobb `67 skeleton for the interior and chassis

post-222-0-10433300-1387243026_thumb.jpg

And then I remembered I bought a bench seat from Harts Parts!!!!!!

post-222-0-70965500-1387243083_thumb.jpg

I have to re-work the patterns on the seats and fabricate all the body glass. I also have to dig out an Autometer billet tach for the dash and make the custom pistol grip shifter I have. The final detail is to make a set of polished exhaust tips and photoshop my license plate. Just wait until I do the full detail version.

Looks like I got a model to build...... ;)

OK, with the Holiday baking killing my weekend, I have a small update. Tonight we swapped out the aluminum hub caps for a set from Scale Equipment LTD. They look much better since they have the Plymouth emblem in the center. With a black wash they look really nice….

post-222-0-42325900-1387774837_thumb.jpg

I also made the window "glass" templates…..

post-222-0-20906900-1387774931_thumb.jpg

And I started cutting and fitting the `70 bench seat. The upholstery pattern still has to be modified. It was a bit too wide.

post-222-0-31408500-1387775088_thumb.jpg

And finally, I just had to test fit the Modelhaus trim. Perfect….

I have a short day tomorrow, and I'm off Tues. & Wed. Should get some momentum now…...

OK…a little got done today. I removed the vent windows from the donor `Cuda, and decided to do some scratch building. I've officially crossed over into "project" territory with this brain storm…..

My biggest peeve with the horrible second generation Barracudas are the grilles. Absolutely horribly scaled and depicted. The front header panel has the trim molded in. Then you snap in the grill with that HORRIBLY thick inserts and now you have a scale grill trim grow from 3/4" to 3"…. and the headlights are NOT a scale 7".

post-222-0-17487400-1387920011_thumb.jpg

Solution? Make new headlight shells. I grabbed some .010 Evergreen and am going to fill in the inside openings so I now have a scale grille shell trim.

post-222-0-20288600-1387920102_thumb.jpg

And once it's all in, I'll trim off the boarder on the stripped grill, make new headlight bezels, and install some proper headlight.

post-222-0-29554100-1387920174_thumb.jpg

I found every piece I need to replicate my car (as a shelf model) except for a pistol grip shifter, which was custom cast for me anyhow, so that's next. More to follow….. B)

Very cool John! B)

So much for the 'quick build' eh?

<Grrrr!!!!!> Yeah, quick build my asphalt! Here's this mornings bout of insanity…..

This grille is killing me. Now we opened up the directional lenses and we'll separate the edging and install a thin boarder around the inner gills, which is supposed to be chromed anyway.

post-222-0-32053100-1387999702_thumb.jpg

Looking at the kit pieces compared to the actual thing is maddening!

Back to the bench later. Time-out to feed the Mother-in-Law some of my absolutely SLAMMING home-made Lasagna and old family recipe meatballs.…. B)

Nice job on this one. Is it curbside?

You`re 1:1 is perfect btw :)

This is going to be a curbside. And as for the 1:1, thank you for the compliment. We made some sacrifices over the course of a few years, and if it wasn't for my Wife and her support, we wouldn't have it. She really is a Car Gal deep down inside. Growing up her Father always had a yard full of MG's & Healy's in various states of repair. She understands, and I'm very grateful for it.

Now that I've officially turned this into a bit more than a "quickie" I may as well get cracking….. It's actually going pretty smooth. It's all fun right now. Thanks for the comments and encouragement gang!

The grilles on these cars are as rare as hen's teeth to find in mint condition. They're proving to be much easier to do in scale!

First things first, remove the outer rim with that HORRIBLE thick lip.

post-222-0-18632600-1388261968_thumb.jpg

Then after shaving down the edge, I made a new inner grill trim ring

post-222-0-40494400-1388262040_thumb.jpg

This will be bare metal foiled

post-222-0-59442200-1388262090_thumb.jpg

Now about those under sized head lights…. A slice of some brass tube

post-222-0-58913300-1388262160_thumb.jpg

After all this is assembled I'll glue in the shells and trim them

post-222-0-49094700-1388262217_thumb.jpg

More to come….. ?

OK…busy day.

I shaded the inner grilles with a base coat of silver Sharpie over the bare resin (gave a realistic sheen..) it got a Detailer black-wash. I then mounted the missing outer trim for the inner grilles, which still have to be foiled. I also foiled the turn signals and filled the cavity with Model Master canopy adhesive (white glue…) for a clear lens appearance.

post-222-0-15746900-1388271267_thumb.jpg

And here's a quick l;ook at the brass headlight buckets after being foiled. The resin lenses are backed with a chrome & paint reflector

post-222-0-67045200-1388271340_thumb.jpg

Gotta take a break. I'll probably hit the bench again later tonight. This is looking so good I want to keep it going.

Another small update. Got the inner grille trim foiled and the background painted…..

post-222-0-78091600-1388346456_thumb.jpg

I then held it place and tried to visualize the inner surrounds done in .010 Evergreen instead of 3/16" of HORRIBLE-NESS of that stocker…..

post-222-0-44547100-1388346565_thumb.jpg

Now to glue in those shells. Let's see if I can ruin this body and break out a spare….. ?

That looks really good! I know what you mean about finding 1:1 grille parts. Almost a deal breaker on my 68

I grab all the beat-up trim & grilles I can get my hands on. I'm teaching myself trim restoration. :)

Here you can see it's only going in a few fractions…...

post-222-0-09117800-1388355105_thumb.jpg

With the excess hanging out the front

post-222-0-12282300-1388355200_thumb.jpg

The grille shells are done on the drivers side, the passenger side still needs a trim.

post-222-0-61565900-1388355268_thumb.jpg

Now i'm drilling & pinning all the mirrors, handles, and wiper arms. It get's a good washing after I fiddle with the interior bucket and install the chassis and set ride height. Still have to do the bench seat. I guess that will be the next set of updates.

Thanks for following along ! ?
