91 Subaru Legacy Wagon Switched to Fotki

Just to quell the rumors that I don't know how to finish anything, I'm pulling up an old one off the shelf. ;) This was my wife's car and was made from a Japanese GT Touring Wagon version and had to have the hood scoop filled and the raised roof lowered. Some minor bumper contours were modified to match the American wagons.Otherwise, it's pretty much box stock.

The worst part of this one was the thin roof pillars considering the amount of body work required to lower the raised roof. The front edge of this can be seen in the box art. One the first attempt, the roof collapsed and another kit was purchased for a new body. Lessons learned made the second one a success. :D

The paint is Subaru Mica Red touch up paint, thinned and sprayed through the gun. All the black trim is BMF black. The rear license plate is a photograph taken so a 4x6 print was the proper 1/24 scale. The paper was thinned with a razor before attaching.

Very nice. I almost bought one of those kits a few years ago, but wasn't sure about the specs for making it U.S.

How did you lower the roof? Looks great.

I was also wondering, did you photo-reduce the plate or get one one of the decals I've seen pop up here and there? I have a green plate on my Caprice and plan on replicating that sometime soon.

Greetings from New Bedford, where are you from?

Hi Charlie. I live in the Berkshires near Pittsfield. Thanks for the compliments. :)

The roof raises most in front and blends smooth at the rear, so I cut through the roof along the front edge and down the sides until it would bend flush with the rest of the roof. It was glued in place and some sheet plastic glued inside along the seam. Sand and putty. The thin roof pillars make this a fragile bodywork area ... cant take a lot of pressure on the roof. I have a 95 Legacy on the bench that underwent the same surgery, my wife's next car. That one's all painted and just needs a new grill made ... one of these days.

The license plate is from a photo of the real plate. I figured the distance to take the photo at for the correct scale on a 4x5 print. I sliced the paper thinner with a razor blade after cutting the plate out for a little more scale. I've made decals as you mention also and that works well too.

Pittsfield...one of my favorite little cities in Massachusetts, especially near Rt. 7. I love how they've made so much progress in bringing it back to life. A very close friend lives in North Adams and I'm thinking of heading back out there in the next few months just to escape the South Coast and return to civilization. Besides, the employment situation can't be any worse!

Prior to moving to New Bedford for work, I was living in Turners Falls, and had an opportunity to go to the Berkshires a couple of times for Masonic-related stuff and have been there a few times over the years just passing through or just to go see what was there to see.

As a quick note, Classic Plastic is having their show October 4 over in Lawrence, it's usually a very good show with some excellent models on display. www.classicplastic.org
