VW93 Posted August 5, 2014 Share Posted August 5, 2014 (edited) I'm almost finished with an AMT '40 Ford sedan so I'm getting started on this project. Since my old laptop fried that had Vista, and this new laptop has Windows 8, I've been having some problems adjusting to the new operating system. The plan is a close copy of this stock '34 that I found on the net. I'm using the Lindberg kit that was issued in 1992 and was molded in tan. I do not plan on painting the cab or bed, the finish on these are really nice. I used some polishing cloths to get out a few fine scratches. There was minimal flash on this kit, surprising for a tool that is at least 50 years old. It does have a few sinkholes I'll need to correct, going to try some "sprue glue" as a filler to correct them. I tried posting pictures through my Photobucket account but for some reason I can't get them to post here. For now I'll have to post them as they are ,I need to figure out the old way of posting pictures here. VW93 Posted August 15, 2014 Author Share Posted August 15, 2014 After countless hours of prep work removing parting lines and sanding, I was finally able to get some parts primed and painted. I still have some other parts to prime, hopefully the humidity will be co-operative tomorrow. Today was the first day in quite awhile where it wasn't 80% or higher. The cab, bed, hood and radiator shell were sanded with polishing clothes working up to 12,000 grit. I plan on leaving them in the tan the kit was molded in. The fenders will be gloss black. The firewall will also be left tan but I will do a little detail painting on it. I filled the hole in the voltage regulator with some sprue glue which I made with some shavings and acetone. I also stripped the chrome from the tools, mirrors, gearshift and brake handle. I still need to prep the wrecker boom from a later issue kit. That will take some work as it was molded in red. VW93 Posted August 24, 2014 Author Share Posted August 24, 2014 Still working on this, the heat and humidity have put a halt to most of the paint work that still needs to be done. I glass beaded the tires and painted the rims gloss black. I used a small blade screwdriver to line up the spokes the best I could. Also drilled out the horn for a more realistic look. Firewall detailed, a little touchup work needed here and there. Frame painted satin black with gloss black suspension and drivetrain. Grill painted satin black with a silver sharpie for the emblem and trim. I hope to get the engine painted this week along with the fenders and start the assembly process. I recently got in the original amt hillbilly hauler 34 pickup in mint condition, with the cardboard display never used. I have a white lindberg one as well, and intend soon to build one stock service wrecker, like you are, the other a hillbillly hauler idea. so far yours looks great, and I am keen to see you complete this ol' gal. regards, the ace........... VW93 Posted September 10, 2014 Author Share Posted September 10, 2014 An update as of today. Engine painted, after looking at the photo's I see a little touchup is required. I painted around the rear window of the cab to simulate a gasket. I'm not sure if that is correct or not as I couldn't find any reference pics. If not it at least adds some contrast to the tan body. I also painted the inside lip of the clear back window. Started assembly of the chassis and components, waiting for the cement to set up before going any further. Attempted to detail paint the hood emblems, handles & catches. Looks better in person plus it's going to be a shelf model. Finally had a break in the weather with only 50% humidity to get some paint on the fenders. One setback was somehow the windshield has mysteriously disappeared. I'd like to blame it on the cat but I don't have one! Luckily I had a parts kit but that windshield was scratched worse than the one that was "misplaced". I sanded it out working up to a 12,000 grit cloth & brushed on some Future. It will have to do. A quick mockup of how it will look. The only component I painted was the fender assembly. The rest of the components will be the molded tan color that I polished out. I am going to wait until the weekend to start the final assembly as I want the painted fenders to finish gassing out. I'm trying a few different techniques with this build such as bead blasting the tires and a little extra detail painting.Ace, when you go to build your kits there are a few things to watch out for. There were a lot of parting lines in my kit. I broke a couple of pieces removing the lines. Also, sand the edges of the windshield before fitting it to the frame. I should have. The fit of the two after gluing wound up cracking the bottom of the frame. Lesson learned for my next build of this kit down the road.You may need to shave some material off the cab were the frame slides in. I also beveled the inside of the top of the cab for a better fit.
