'58 Impala Update

Recommended Posts

I finally got the Pegasus 22" Chrome T wheels for my '58 Impala. (Thanks, Rollin, for all your help with figuring out what wheels to order).

I had to narrow them a bit to get them to fit into the wheel wells. Here's how it looks now:

Overall, I like the way they look in the rear, but I can't decide if I want to lower the front suspension a bit or put a set of smaller diameter Chrome Ts up front. I may lower the rear a bit, too. I really like the lowered look and stance of Randy's '58 Pontiac that I borrowed a picture of for comparison. Thanks, Randy!!

If you missed the prior post, here's how it looked before the guys talked me into changing the wheels:

So, guys, what do you think??? Smaller wheels in the front? Lower the whole thing?

Thanks,

Yeah, definitely lower it. If the wheels didn't lift the car you'd be fine. But, unfortunately, my nose is telling me that it's itching to bleed!   I do have to say that those wheels are the right choice, though. I don't think you have to go smaller up front; that car is big enough to pull off the matched set. You should drop it the same amount all the way around to keep the rake, but you already knew that. There's my two copper Lincolns for ya! :P

Thanks, Jonathan! Yes, after comparing it side-by-side in the photos with Randy's Pontiac, it was really obvious to me what I want to do with it. I just thought that I'd throw it out there to see what you and the others thought. I'm pretty sure that Randy will say to drop it to the ground as well...

gotta go with the big-n-littles now buddy... :P those wheels make a world of difference.... keep the suspension exactly where it set right now... just put the smaller "T's" up front and you'll have a mean rake goin on.....

Rollin,

I'm going to buy the smaller set of wheels to see how they look. If I like them then I'll have a spare set of big-n-littles. If not, I'll have a spare set of smaller diameter wheels... Either way I can't loose because I really like the look of the Chrome Ts.

I really like the stance of Randy's '58 Pontiac, so there's a pretty good chance that I'm going to lower the rear at least a little bit. The 22" wheels kicked it up a bit higher in the back than I wanted. I'd be really happy if the smaller front wheels get it down where I want it without having to mess with the front suspension, which WAS/IS already finished.

Anyway, thanks for all your help and advice,

Raul, you really need to lower it, and put the smaller dia. wheels in front. It's now on the border of "donks"..... That Poncho has the right look, go for the same stance!

That's all I needed to hear to make me want to lower it to the weeds!! The word "Donk".:lol: Ouch!!:lol:

Next time you guys see a picture of this thing it'll be draggin' the ground!!:lol:

Thanks for all of the input,

Donks?? OUCH! B) Raul, you gotta airbag that Chebby until it scrapes! You will get it lower in the front with the smaller 'T's, but it might have to be trimmed to fit the bigger ones in the rear. I only used that combo once, on a '66 Malibu wagon that I wanted a mean rake. Without doing a lot of surgery, I couldn't get it much lower in the rear. IMG_1962-1.jpg

You're getting there, though!

watch how u use the word "donks"..... those wheels are nowhere near donk status.... i would never had recommended any "donk" stuff.....

on another note..... the chevelle wagon has an awesome stance even with the rear not slammed....

Thanks, Randy!! I'm going to try the smaller Ts in the front, but I'm also going to have to lower the rear a bit. I'd really like to get it as close to your Pontiac in stance and height as I can without putting too much more work into what was supposed to be a finished chassis. I don't ever want to be accused of building the dreaded "D" word!!:lol::lol:

The wheels in your first photo are WAY too big...cartoonish looking. VERY uncomfortably close to "DONK" status...and you don't want to go there! :(

I'd say the wheel size on the 58 Pontiac are perfect.

BTW...seeing the Chevy and Pontiac side by side like that you can really see how they're the same exact car, just "decorated" differently. GM really had the "badge engineering" concept down to a science back then!

This looks much better now Raul, but I'll add to the "front wheels need to be smaller" debate..I've got a set of 4 small T's if you need em...

keep the updates coming man!!

Gray

Thanks, Gray!! I already ordered a set from the LHS. I'll take you up on your offer if they can't get me a set quickly.

I also chopped and hacked away at the rear suspension and braking system last night. I got the rear end lowered way down and switched it from drum to disc brakes. Those bigger wheels really need a disc behind them to look right.

I'm going to wait until I get the other wheels and tires befor I do anything else to it. I going to try Harry's idea and see how it looks with just the smaller wheels. Those 22s are pretty close to being classifies as Donk wheels.:lol:

Personally,, I think the regular size peggys are a good size for a big car. If it was me, I'd save the 23"s for a pickup. ,, ,, But that's just my opinion.

Here's my '58 with the 19" T's and the bigger Mishelin Pilot tires Pegasus sells to go with them.

Thanks, Steve! I've ordered the 19" wheels from the LHS. I've also lowered the rear about as low as it will go without the axle sitting on the frame rails and it still looks a little tall in the rear to me. I'll check on those bigger tires. I've never bought Pegasus stuff before, so I didn't know that they offered different sized tires.

I don't know why everybody keeps calling those wheels "donk" wheels, I think the 22" t's look great, on you Imp. With 19s up front and in the weeds would make it look awesome. They are a vast improvement over the old Camaro wheels.

Robert,

Thanks for convincing me to get rid of the old Camaro wheels. You're right, they just don't look as well as the Ts do on that big of a car. Last night I lowered the rear enough that I think the 22" T's actually look OK. I'm going to hold off on lowering the front until I give the 19" T's a test fit to see if I like the "big-n-little" look on this one.

Here's how it looks now with the 22's F&R and the rear lowered, as compared to before:

22InchChromeTs-vi.jpg58Impala11-vi.jpg

I think for now that I'm going to polish and BMF the body and maybe finish the interior while I wait for the other wheels. At least that way I'll be making some progress on this old dog and I'll be less likely to get tired of messing with it and put it all back in the box for another day...

exactly.... the car did not have to be raised for those wheels to fit..... i think any wheels that will fint in the fenderwells and be lowered are ok...... NOT DONK.... anything bigger i wouldn't like anyway..... and yes, i'm sure EVERYONE will agree that even if he keeps the bigger size all around that it'll still be a huge improvement over the camaro wheels.... this is a donk....

to me they might as well demolition derby the thing..... at least the pain does't stick around....

P.S. sorry for th long winded reply... didn't mean to sound like "Bluesman Mark"

Steve I love that 58, is that a promo or a resin kit?

  • 2 weeks later...

As long as you remember: AIRBAGS ARE FOR FAGS! ill just agree, but imo 22's are a bit too big for any car older than -69, but it still LOOKS good, good choice by going for the big'n'littles.

And; i cant believe you people go by calling 22's DONK size....
