A month or two ago, Cadillac announced they would have this feature available on productions models in two years. I'm a little leery of it. But in this litigious society we live in, it must work. Else they wouldn't be putting it out on the market.

Buses have limited routes. Autonomous cars could potentially go anywhere and are personal.

I'm sure the AI driving the thing is vastly more competent than most drivers.

I'm also very aware that computers fail. At inopportune times. A failed AI in a driverless car could have consequences much more spectacular than some drunk fool running down the interstate the wrong way at 100 mph.

And just how friggin lazy do you have to be to find it's ooh too much effort to drive for yourself?

It could be laziness. But I think there's a couple of other things at work here:

1) Fear. Everybody seems to be afraid of everything these days, and there's a lot of frightened drivers out there, too. These drivers are probably behind half the traffic jams I get stuck in every time I climb in the car these days. There they are, planted in the passing lane, plodding along at 30 MPH, death-grip on the wheel, jabbing at the brakes. A lane change is traumatic. These people would be a lot happier in "driverless" cars. Imagine getting that stressed-out every time you climb behind the wheel?

2) Distracted driving. A lot of people today would prefer to be gazing at their smartphones, or playing with some other kind of electronic device, rather than driving. I was listening to a Honda ad on TV this morning. No mention was made of engine type, performance, fuel economy or utility; only mention of what on-board electronics were available. Distracted drivers cause the majority of accidents today; most likely the cause of the other half of traffic jams I get into every day that I have to drive to work.

I was behind a guy this morning (on a rural 2-lane) who was going down the road at 60 MPH for one moment, and then 30 MPH the next, back up to 50, then 20, weaving, randomly jabbing the brakes, etc. I was finally able to pass and glanced over when I got next to him to see that sure enough, there he was, the most important person in the world, with his smartphone balanced on the rim of the wheel, texting away. These people should be required to have driverless cars. Or, tossed in jail.

Silly boys! Real men drive their own cars? I guess you haven't had my commute... when I lived in NJ and worked in NY was 1:30 hours in the morning and 2 hours going home... mind numbing stop and go monotony. Oh, it was only 53 miles! Punctuated occasionally.. no really regularly, by one of you guys who flinched for a second and creamed the car in front of you. A daily occurrence that could cost me a half to a full hour. Nothing like a 3 hour trip to work.

My commute to NJ from PA takes 1:20 hours each way. I'd love to have a driverless car. That's called a chauffer! I could've used that time to um.... sleep, cruise this board or even (gasp!) get a bit of work done! Bring it on!
