Got threatened for parking in the disabled spot today

Recommended Posts

Just thought Id share this with you all...for some reason there are people out there that think one has to look like some kind of freak or something to be disabled and not all disabled people use the disabled plates(me I use the parking card so I can have it when i ride with someone else)... so ok I got to the store and pull into a disabled parking spot...a early 20s guy on a bike pulls in next to me and says...This is for disabled people only people that need or deserve it very rudely...I say kindly look on my dashboard i have a parking card. He goes off threatening to kick my? and says my dad is disabled! I tell him I am sorry he is I am too...but it does not stop he still wants to fight me so i am waiting for him to through a punch now. After many words i just got in to the store....Why do i and others have to deal with these un-informed or un-educated people????...one does not get a parking card here easily at all so if you have one you qualify and the state paperwork says(place on dash or hang from mirror while parked)I wonder how he would have felt to loose a fight with a disabled guy??? Just never could figure out why some people open their mouths without thinking or knowing what there talking about???

Hey, it takes all kinds. Lots of jerks out there. I will say I do see quite a few people using those spots out here that do not have the plate or the placard hanging from the mirror. One jerk can ruin your whole day huh ?

Oh yeah he ruined my day...I have enough to try and deal with like others...all he would have had to do is look on the dashboard to see the card(state paperwork says place on dashboard or hang from mirror)...if I wouldn't have been alone smaller weaker i would have relocated his jaw bone. Yes there are many that abuse the privilege of a card...me if I can i always park somewhere else figuring if someone feels worse than I can use it but today and during winter weather I needed to.

Easy to understand the guy's reaction. A LOT of people who are NOT disabled use those spots, and a lot of people who are not disabled use fake cards. In fact there was a story here in the paper not long ago about cracking down on all the people who have phony disabled cards and abuse the system. Obviously if you really are disabled and the card is legit, you don't want to have to prove that you're really disabled... but with so many people cheating the system it's easy to see why someone would react the way the guy did. That doesn't make it right... just makes it easy to understand why.

True Harry but it does not make it right...and to try and pick a fight??? If hes in doubt call the police and have them check my parking card...he started in before he ever got to the front of the truck...he was just looking for a fight. Maybe he will learn a lesson over this but I doubt it...our state is now conceal and carry with permit. Way too easy to pick on the weak when one is not.

Mark I have got the look and I have to use a cane. I have a tag on my car for handicap parking. I would have got his tag number and pulled out my cell and called the police. They are checking and writing tickets here. I never judge anyone or I would be like him....

Some people think that they should be the ones who decides who is disabled and who is not. I tell them that it's up to the doctor and the Secretary of State. I've seen disabled people driving Corvettes and cycles and good for them. It's not up to other people to decide what handicapped people should drive either.

Sorry to hear you had to deal with that guy. I too have a disabled card, although mine is temporary due to surgery. I have also seen a young, apparently healthy person jump out of a corvette and walk into a store with greater ease than I could, and wonder if that card was really his. There is abuse of the system, but NO ONE has the right to question or threaten someone because THEY think you don't need it, that's up to the authorities to determine, not some jerk with an agenda.

A friend of mine lost both of his legs below the knees in Vietnam, but gets around very well on his new limbs. So well in fact that he rides a two wheeled Harley. Indiana has handicap plates for bikes and he has them on his. I know of several times he's had the same experience as yours.

Mark, sorry for your unfortunate turn of events, this world is full of folks like that, of course the appropriate response from this jerk should have been "Oh I'm sorry Sir I didn't see your placard" and went on. More times than not some folks jaw jumps in gear before their brain does and then they make a complete a_ _ out of themselves!! :)

Exactly Larry...! Then to stand there and try to pick a fight with someone weaker than them...I guess the guy was lucky it was me even though he almost ran out of luck with me. In this state one has to go through hoops and ladders long process to get a chance to get a permit...not to mention what they have to go through every day of their lives...to me that should be enough already but like you said there is always someone that just has to let their big mouth open way too quickly. Me...if I am having a rare good day i will park somewhere else so the spot is open for someone else to use and the only thing that can take my pain away is Morphine but cant tolerate it and I have no clue of where i am on it so I just deal with the pain best i can. My disability is permanent and expected to worsen which it has over the years...doctors are amazed that I can get myself to do what i can. One has no clue what others go through till they do themselves...another reason why i show respect to everyone.

Sorry to hear that Mark, some people just don't understand. My sister-in-law has severe RA and has had similar experiences as you, but she just keeps on walking and doesn't let the jackwagons get to her.

I personally would have let the air out of his tires if the bike was still there when I came out of the store, just to teach him a lesson.

Next time you are confronted like that, get the police involved, idiots like him have to understand it isn't his job to enforce laws, it's their job!

I used to think the same thing when I saw a car park in a disabled spot and a normal looking person got out and walked away, not that I ever confronted anyone on it. But that was before I became disabled for almost three years with a nasty neurological condition. I looked normal, but wasn't. I couldn't drive a car, so I never got a card; but I learned fast that there are all kinds of disabilities, not just the obvious ones.

My wifey has a disability due to an injury at two years of age that caused hydrocephalus. She has balance and stability issues. She drives the trucklet more than I and goes places she needs to go to. We use a placard when she is with me or driving her self. People are pretty rude when they assume it's me that has the placard. I get attacked all the time with comments like "If you'd lose weight, you would not need to have a disabled placard, you fat blankety blank". They don't ever notice Lori standing there with a cane she sometimes needs. First off, they do not give placards to overweight people, second, mind yer derned business...I tell them. Or how about the people who pull into the disabled spot and then tell you they are just popping in for a second. I just say as I'm dialing the local PD, let's see if the cops can get here before you leave then.

Thanks guys..pretty much ruined my day...by the way he was on a bicycle of all things and he chained it to the parking sign post.

If you really wanted a laugh, you should've gone into the store, bought a padlock, and added it to his already locked chain. Then wait to see the expression on his face when he see's it!!!

I've become permanently disabled, but I won't get a handicap parking tag. There are other people out there who need and deserve the space more than I. If I was there, I think I would have had a field day!

Some people appoint themselves the "Fighter of other people's fights". He was a jerk, plain and simple. You should tell him to call the police. I think his threats to you were very close to assault. Hmmm. Maybe you should have called the cops!

i asked him if I needed to call them...his reply was remember there is time between you calling them and when they get here...yep he was looking to prey on someone smaller and weaker than him. Being disabled and alone at the time would have been nice to have someone there.

Actually Harry it is not easy to understand, people need to keep their noses out of other people's business. Many individuals have handicapping conditions that may not be readily apparent to others. Yet they are just as needful of the use of a handicap parking spot as a person with a van, driver and in a wheelchair.

My sister in law is the victim of a hack doctor(?) whom during back surgery "slightly" nicked a few nerves in her back, she now walks around unable to lift her foot to maintain a normal gate, this worsens the more she has walked during the day. She too is constantly reminded by well meaning oafs that the spot is for Handicapped persons... Her normal response is something like; "Well I'll tell my Doctor about that next time I see him..." Most of the time the idiot realizes they screwed up and goes about minding their own business.

Another one we like to laugh about now. I had a guy working for me who came in telling me that he needed to go to his Doctor to get his Handicapped placard renewed. My response was something like, "what for, you stub your toe or something?" So he proceeds to pull off his boot and lower leg, Oops! He was working on his dad's fishing boat at 16. The ice auger got stuck, while trying to free it up he got caught in the auger which chewed his foot and lower part of his leg off. He occasionally developshot spots from his prosthesis which he never told anyone about because he never wanted the handicap stigma. I never knew about this, he wasn't hired with a handicapping status. This same guy has worked on our inspection crew for years, yet only uses his "Handicap" placard very occasionally when he needs it. He like a whole lot of others in that same boat would rather be able bodied, so much so that they go to great lengths to prove they can do every thing every one else can.

So just because you can't detect a person's handicapping condition does not give them the right to hassle them. If they are that concerned then call a police officer, and let them sort it out.

Sorry for the rant, and Harry I am not attacking you, you just illustrated how a whole lot of people seem to feel sorry if you feel like I stepped on your toes I didn't mean to.
