MrObsessive
OK, I just got in the mail Time Machine's resin '71 Olds Delta 88 that I snagged off eBay. I must say that this is a very nice casting with only some very minor cleanup needed! My question is though.........what are the list of kits that would have a proper engine for this?? IIRC, these were available with 455's in 1971. Anyone know what would be a reasonable facsimile to do this one stock? Thanks in advance fellas! The Revell ols Cutlass engine is the best bet for the engine and the ancilliary parts that go with it. I snagged a incomplete kit, and was able to get the engine, and everything else I need for my secret Olds project. If you can find a kit, it's kind of pricy, but those parts are worth the price of admission.
om617
AMT 69 Hurst does have a nice 455,but maby the aircleaner would be all wrong.
w451973
The Revell Cutlass would be your best bet. The notched valve covers are wrong for b and c body cars so you want some from any Johan Olds kit. You'll want to cut off the short snorkel of the air cleaner to make a more accurate one. The Revell kit uses a short tail 400 trans as did all a bodies so you'll need to modify it into a long tail. You'll want to toss the chassis plate from the Delta and find something more suitable. The wheel base of the Cutlass will be shorter and can be lengthend.
my80malibu
The AMT kit has the four speed option only. You would need to find a source for the B.O.P transmission.

I saw this kit offered a couple times before on eBay, and I figured if it shows up again, I'm going to snag it! I have the '72 Olds kit (the one with the uptop), but I don't want to break that one up just for parts. I'll search around for probably a whole kit as I can use parts from that one for other things. They can be had for a reasonable price if you search around............. BTW Ron, I believe Jeff is casting these on a fairly regular basis as this is the third or fourth time I've seen it show up. One just sold again yesterday for slightly less than what I paid for mine, so they'll be out there if you want one. The Revell Cutlass would be your best bet. BTW, the kit comes complete with a very nicely cast chassis (probably derived from the MPC '70's Caprices), and wouldn't need a donor chassis for that. I'd have to scratch up an exhaust among other things as the kit doesn't include that.
w451973
Hey Bill, sorry about that. For some reason I was thinking I saw one offered with a modified Johan 75 Cutlass snap kit chassis. Or maybe that was a built up on ebay.
unclescott58
How about the Jo-Han Toronado? I know both my '70 and '72s have 455s in them. Scott
Ron Hamilton
How about the Jo-Han Toronado? I know both my '70 and '72s have 455s in them. Scott The Jo Han Toronados are front drive, with a specific transmission and air cleaner, and no A/C, while the Delta 88 is rear drive. The Revell Cutlass has a Turbo 400 as one of its transmissions, and a A/C accessory drive, both of which may work on the full sized car. w451973
Revell did such a nice job with the A/C stuff and valve covers, I just wish they would have made an alternator bracket. I made one myself but it still would have been nice to have. Also, the JoHan Olds motors used a early Toronado style power steering pump, front cover and oil pan. Even with their 442 kits. Casey
The AMT kit has the four speed option only. You would need to find a source for the B.O.P transmission. The Revell '72 includes both auto and 4-speed manual transmisions.
REPLICAS
Looking for 1/25th stock 57 olds valve covers, know anyone who makes them? Revell 50 olds covers are different. Thanks, Paul Edited January 9, 2015 by REPLICAS
Ace-Garageguy
Looking for 1/25th stock 57 olds valve covers, know anyone who makes them? Revell 50 olds covers are different. Thanks, Paul Just for reference, stock '57 371 Olds valve covers don't have the multiple inverted vertical ribs or the wire looms like the 303 in the '50 has. Instead, they have 2 outside vertical ribs that stiffen the covers under the bolt holes. I don't recall seeing these specific covers in a kit, but the smooth ones in the 394 Olds-powered version of the SWC Revell Willys are the right shape, and could be modified with styrene strip to represent the ribs. The SWC covers are for the last version of the first-generation Olds OHV V8, and have 2 small bolt-hole indentations that would need to be filled also. drball
I do not own one, but how good is the engine in the Johan 63 Starfire kit.
Ace-Garageguy
I do not own one, but how good is the engine in the Johan 63 Starfire kit. It represents the last version of the generation-one Olds overhead valve V8, the 394 cu.in. engine. The detail is light, typical annual Johan with an axle-hole through the block, and heads molded in one piece with the intake manifold, but it looks pretty much like what's the real car. The exhaust manifolds and valve covers are quite good (though the valve covers are painted on the real car, not chrome) and the location of the alternator and PS pump are correct. (I have a 1:1 '63 Olds convertible). This is an entirely different engine than the OP was asking about, and is the last development of the 303 cubic inch V8 Olds introduced in 1949.
