Long term effects

Recommended Posts

I don't know if anyone has already posted this topic, but I thought it would be helpful. Please post the info you have gained on what NOT to do with paints, adhesives, decals, etc. that will let everyone know the long term effects of incompatible substances. I'm sure someone has painted, glued or decaled something that looked great, but down the road something went awry. I assume we all know not to apply lacquer over enamel due to the different drying times, but I shouldn't assume things, right ? Myself, I would like to know if spraying Dullcote over applied decals has a bad effect after a few months or years. Or does aluminum tubing show corrosion over time ? Please cut loose guys on anything long term negative. I look forward to seeing what you have to say.

DO NOT spray Testors clear enamel over BMF!! It will yellow quickly and be ruined! That was the worst tip I ever took from this forum! I had just began using BMF and thought it was a good idea. NOT!

Peel and stick vinyl whitewalls is sometimes discussed on this forum as a cheap and attractive way to beautify tires. My experience is after a couple years they react with the tire vinyl and get ripply, wavy and need to be removed. If I remember later, I'll try to post some photos.

Probably everyone knows this, but don't use Humbrol Enamel Clear with light colors.... It will turn the color into yellow. This is Juha Airio's Monte Carlo that is built decades ago and it has been sitting in its box. He took it out for a local model car show last year. I liked the color on it and I asked that what is it... Well it is regular silver paint, but Humbrol clear turned it into this during the decades.

It's a super nice build, picture don't definitely do it a justice.

Thanks Niko. Good info.

Carl I wonder if vinyl whitewalls are different from dry transfer whitewalls. I don't know myself. I have used Shabo lettering on slicks on a couple of drag kits and had no problems. They have been on the tires for years. I always thought Shabo letters were a type of pigment on wax paper. That was my guess anyway. I never researched them.

It only took half a year to get photos of what I tried to describe above, but this is what I've found happens in the long term to vinyl stick on white walls. There seems to be a reaction to the vinyl tires. They started turning to bacon just two or three years later. They'd have fallen off completely if they weren't pinched between the wheel and tire.

were the tires cleaned with alcohol (or anything else) prior? looks like the adhesive gave up the bond.

Well that's a consideration. I'm sure I didn't. This was built before the internet when I was less informed. When I pulled this out to photograph, I was surprised that there was no adhesive at all, not even gummy, like it was never there.

That's kind of a happy accident. Looks like it could be a factory color.
