I'm working on a build and would like to get this look on my grill instead of the solid chrome look. Any tips or suggestions?? Hey Fast Floyd i used your pic for reference hope you don't mind. James W
The trick to painting a grill as you ask is to use thinned black paint. It flows into the deepest areas and puddles there giving the effect of a cut out grill. Mix paint at about 50/50 with thinner or water as appropriate. Be careful of solvents, they will strip the chrome off sometimes so water base paint is your best bet. And welcome to the forum btw.
Scooby
Sounds good to me. I'll give it a try. Thanks James!!
Gregg
The Detailer makes a great wash for the grilles, I think they have a web site: http://www.thedetailer.net This is what I use for all my grille washes
The Creative Explorer
I use the q-tip method. Simply apply the black paint on the grille and every minute stop painting, get a q-tip and wipe the spilled paint off the grille. Works easy and you don't have to do a lot of work. mageckman
I use black india ink for my wash. I use the dropper in the lid to drop the ink in all the holes or lines in the grille. After I have the grille full I use either a q-tip or a tissue to wipe the black off the raised portion of the grille.Occasionally, I have to go back over an area and hit it with the ink again, but not very often. The bottle I have is probably about 15 years old(leftover from my scrimshawing days). I don't think a bottle of the black ink is all that expensive. Hope this helps, Mageck
