We have the Lizard Company, and my recently insured and licensed driving daughter had an accident. The claims people, came to the scene, and handled everything, from towing, to getting her home safely. The car was repaired to better condition than it was, before the accident. The only out of pocket expenses, was the deductable. We had a rental car, for the time it was being repaired. I was expecting the premium to rise, but in fact, it had dropped a few dollars. They have accident forgiveness policies. And I could not be more happy with them. I had more problems in the past with Allstate and State Farm because of the car, being a 1985 Camaro. They see the Camaro and doubled the rate, even though this car is a 4 banger, all show and no go.

Great topic Harry and you are correct- shop around! We used to have one of those "Nationwide" insurance companies and when the premiums came due along with a 30% increase, no one at the agency or company could explain why! We are AAA members and used them to find cheaper insurance as they are brokers for several companies, which worked fine for a couple of years (minimal increases) until that company decided to jack our rates up sky high (over 65%- no claims I might add!). Once again we called up AAA and are now insured through their "Members Insurance".

In 23 years of home ownership we have only made one claim- hail damaged roof- which I was told was factored into our premiums as the insurance companies know the odds of that happening are pretty good. It's been years since we have had any car claims (knock on wood!) and hope that continues.

I have had a company furnished vehicle for the last 18 years and only since we bought a car for my son to start driving 3 years ago did we qualify for the multi car discount. I have never been able to figure out why having 2 vehicles on the road is cheaper for an insurance company than 1!

We have the "old peoples"(has four letters in it's name) car and renters insurance and just got the bill for the next year and it went up 25%. Called and they claimed it was the uninsured drivers in our town that was the biggest reason. Trying to decide at this moment if we should look around or not. Richard

I've heard that line too Richard, plus living in Suburban Chicago  I still want to know why my 16 year old 190hp Jeep Cherokee costs nearly as much to insure as my 2 year old 283+ horse Chrysler 200 sedan for the exact same coverage and being registered at the same house and to the same driver, with the same insurer using almost all of the same discounts. Outside of vehicle features, I can't think of any good reasons. My 200 has 6 airbags (no windbags though, I avoid those radio stations :P ), Traction Control, Stability Control, Anti-lock Brakes, and factory alarm. The Jeep has 2 airbags (and the same windbag count), full time 4wd (wish it had a limited slip rear too though), power steering, power brakes, and it's old enough and has enough miles that an alarm is probably no longer necessary..................

you guys are extremly lucky, at least you HAVE a choice to stay with bad company's, we had this stuff jammed down our throats.

read twice the last line

We are headed there. My new job is a consulting gig so I'll have to buy my own health insurance. This new Obama Care legislation is supposed to give everyone access to affordable health care. Last year I applied for private insurance and was turned down. Then I found out everyone I knew who was over 50 had also been turned down. So the companies just wanted to cherry pick and insure 25 year old kids who wouldn't cost them any claims. So it sounds noble that companies must accept EVERYONE, but doesn't guarantee prices, saying that the market will sort that out through competition. I saw that as a problem.

I go to the site and there are only two companies serving my county so there is zero incentive for them to compete. The quotes start at $900 a month for just my wife and I. And that policy is $6,000 deductible per person, $12,000 family deductible BEFORE it covers ANYTHING. That's right, you are 100% out of pocket until you meet those deductibles. And after you get there, it only covers 30%. That's like having NO insurance.

To get what we'd consider BAD insurance, those policies start at $1,000-1,500 a month with large deductibles but allow for doctors visits etc at a $50 copay and $100 co-pay for a specialist, but you must get authorization from the company first.

Now the prices above are the starting prices. I haven't even gone in to apply and see how they jack us up from there.

There is a calculator on the page to see if you qualify for the much touted government subsidy towards your coverage. I kept putting in numbers, and found that even if we had a family income of less than $50,000 we wouldn't qualify for anything. So here's this AFFORDABLE health care act, that will fine you if you don't buy coverage, that expects a family with $3000 monthly take home to spend 1/3 to 1/2 of it on the friggin policy! Something is sooo totally wrong here!

Ok to mention names ? We had Farmers for a few years and it just kept climbing. We called around . Wanted to insure home and 3 vehicles. 2002 F-150, 2002 Focus and a 2004 Mustang GT. Found Liberty Mutual where we got better coverage for about 900 bucks less a year. Also with that got free roadside service for all 3 cars for no additional coverage. It sure does pay to shop around.

Found Liberty Mutual where we got better coverage for about 900 bucks less a year.

The lady who hit my wife in our Jaguar had Liberty Mutual. They admitted their party was at fault and asked me to go to their preferred body shop for an inspection / estimate. I had already gotten two real estimates in the $5000 range. Their estimate was $3500. I asked the inspector and he said, he didn't know how they arrived at the number, he just put the services into their program. He also admitted that he wouldn't fix the car for that. Then they called and offered us 20% of their lowball estimate. They said, "Yea, our party is at fault but this is our offer. If you don't accept it, sue us."

What they didn't know was that I was fairly high up in my company that recommended Liberty Mutual to their employees... not any more!

Have had 2 bad expierences with 2 different companies , the first was one mainly for teacher unions and they were cheapest when i started driving. fast forward a few years and my dad and i have our old cars with this place he gets a notice that his premium for a stock 350 chevelle was going up key word stock . mine was more modified than his and they had pics to show it but the listed his as perforance and my nova as not. they lost the entire family

Then I had an erily bad time with a claim had a honda pull out in front of me at a low speed did more damage to her car but mine did need the bumper straightened and some filler panels fixed and painted . Two weeks of fighting took my ins broker to have it fixed in a day . the main office played it like a 74 Nova could not be nice enough to fix. same comp. i accidentally forgot to make a payment for one monthand they would not renew with a ticket two years before for a 59 in a 40 . wanted me to pay 3k a year for minimum
