russosborne
Hi. My name is Russ. 54 years old. Currently am an unemployed :-( RF Electronic technician. Just started to build models again after a few years off. Still need to work on the basics, I tend to want to rush and just build the darn thing. Just like when I was a kid. :-) But I am getting better. :-) But nothing I build is ready for the public at this point. I tend to build models that I built as a kid. It's a good thing that lots of them have been reissued. I can't afford the originals. Have an airbrush, and I just finally bought a compressor. Need to start using it. Always used spray cans in the past. I just hope that this time around I don't get burnt out. I really do enjoy this stuff. Good to be here. russosborne
Thanks, all. I used to spend way too much time on rec.models.scale in case anyone here was there. I know Art Anderson was there. :-) Been several years now since I have been there much, they are pretty much all air and armor these days. Jeff, are you a member of any clubs around here? I am thinking it would be a good idea for me to join one. Russ
Tom Geiger
Welcome Russ! Watch the build threads, read the tips and you'll be building better in no time. When I got involved (before the Internet) I joined a club and with the guidance there, I was building better models almost immediately. It's not black magic, just little tips and things you haven't thought of on your own. And do join a local club if you find one! And don't be afraid to post questions and progress shots of your builds. The folks here are non judgmental and eager to help.

Maybe Joe in Youngstown is a club member or knows of one: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showuser=2581
kingiguana
Russ, welcome to the forum,....Im Joe. I live in Yongstown,....the only club I know of is S.V.A.S.M Shenango Valley Area Scale Modelers. They meet in Sharon. They have a website that has more info. Although the site could use some work. Years ago there was YAMA Youngstown Area Modelers Association. But, I think that's long gone now. I've often thought of starting a club in this area, but never got to it, and the logistics, like where to meet, when, who, costs ? Well, again, welcome, there is a lot of info on this, and you can search old articles for more info.

Well, again, welcome, there is a lot of info on this, and you can search old articles for more info. Don't over complicate it! Sounds like there are three of you on this thread. Just figure a time and place to get together (a public place, one of your homes, etc) and just do it. In my book, a meeting of three people can be a club. No costs, no rules, just bring a model and get together. If it grows, things will just happen naturally. For instance, the club in Indianapolis is pretty robust and they take turns meeting at homes. Each meeting is somewhere different. There's a club that evolved on the other board in I believe, Michigan. They meet in a local burger joint. I know of another club that meets at a pizza place. Restaurants are often happy to host if you all order something. The clubs I attend meet in a church basement and a first aid squad bulding. Good luck. Do it! crazyjim
Florida Auto & Scale Trucks (FAST) model club meets at the Ocala Hobby Lobby. They allow us to use their training room for free on the 1st Saturday of every month. Michaels wanted $50.00 for each meeting.

niteowl7710
Welcome Russ! You're down the road from where I spent my H.S. years, and my parents still live. SVASM is an IPMS club, but at least when I used to go to their shows in years past the automotive entries held their own to the point that you wouldn't realize it was an IPMS show (which have a reputation of just being Sea, Air & Armor with a little SciFi for good measure). I think that was because it was a halfway point between all the automotive guys in Cleveland & Pittsburgh, and has traditionally been the earliest local fall show. russosborne
Thanks again, all. That SVASM sounds really promising. Sharon isn't too far away, like what, 18 miles? Much closer than Cleveland. Plus they meet at a time that actually works for me. I'm going to check them out in January, I don't want my first meeting to be at their Christmas party. russosborne
Joe, Are you talking about the Boardman HobbyTown, or is there another hobby shop I don't know about there? I really miss John's Hobby Shop in Mansfield, would like to find something similar(not a chain) close by. Thanks, Russ
niteowl7710
When I lived in the area back in the 1990's my LHS was Trumbull Camera & Hobbies which was out in Howland. They eventually became cameras only around 2000, and then went out of business entirely afterwards.
kingiguana
Russ, m talking about Boardman Hobby shop. That's where I purchase about 98% of my stuff, the other 2% is between Hobby Lobby, Hobby Town, Amers, Swap Meets, and online. And to James, Yes my sister worked at Trumbull Camera and Hobby just about the time the changed over. I was out of the hobby at the time and into HO slots cars. She called me and said they were having a hobby clearance. So, I drove up there, and found no slot car stuff. However, her fellow employee handed me a cardboard box, and said fill it up, so I put a crapload of kits, some paints, and a teddy bear for my girlfriend at the time. Went to the register, and he said, give me a $20.00 So I went back a few days later, and cleared out the remainder of kits for another $20. So, I was back into the hobby after two trips. russosborne
Russ, m talking about Boardman Hobby shop. Joe, I just went there this afternoon. Well worth the short trip. I hadn't really planned on buying much, ended up buying two kits and a bunch of other stuff. Not car related, but they have a 1/350 USS Independence WWII carrier. This is the ship my grandfather served on in WWII and I had no idea there was such a large scale kit of it. $130, couldn't get it today, but I plan on getting one asap. Thanks, Russ

Thanks, Russ Glad you found Tom's shop Russ...one of the nicest shop owners I've found anywhere. He's well stocked with current kits, out-of-production stuff (by a few years anyway, nothing super-old) as well as a clearance table. I try to buy a kit every month or two from him. And his prices are decent too
David G.
Welcome Russ. I'm originally from Hubbard, if you've been to Sharon PA, you know where Hubbard's at. I escaped to Phoenix in 1989 after living in Akron for a few years. I remember going to Amers a couple of times, it was right on 224, right? Any how, it's good to hear some of the old regional names again. Welcome to the best model car forum on the web. David G.
