'59 Bonneville, Update, Done! 4/11

Well, as can sometimes happen, I've begun to lose interest in a '62 Chrysler 300 build the more I researched this '59 Bonneville. So this one may be "leap frogging" ahead. Although I will still try to keep the 300 moving along also. I think the body prep is all done & ready for priming. I'll start doing that this evening. I also swiped a set of wheels from an old Plymouth kit as the originals were a little chewed up from over gluing, as is pretty common. A new set of Modelhaus "Satco" tires await as well. Steve

Cool,

I was over at a friends house last weekend he tried to sell me a 59 and a 60 Bonneville hardtops . $100 for the pair. But I had just bought both in convertibles . He sold the 59 on Ebay this week but still has the 60.. and I may just go ahead and grab it

I've always loved the roof line on the '59 & '60 GM cars. One of the reasons I build so many hard tops. I still have a '60 to do as well. Steve

This should be good. This year Pontiac remind me a little of the 59 Mercury, mostly at the rear i guess.

Anyone considered use the Trumpeter 60 and bash for full detail? Maby not worth it for the sake of value.

I may use some of the parts from the Trumpeter kit if there's anything usable for a '59. But I will be building this as a curbside so swapping will be minimal. Although I may be able to use a few parts when I build the '60. Lord knows I'll never build the Trumpeter kit! Steve

Got a start on the paint on this one today. Started with the coral color which will adorn the top, wheels & the panel between the tail lights. That is the toughest part of painting this model! I always get so nervous about masking chromed parts for painting. Even a little bit of "bleed under" & your part is ruined! Not to mention the risk of the tape pulling up chrome & that sort of thing. But the trusty BMF & Tamiya tape came through again! I wouldn't even attempt something like this anymore without these types of products! Anyway, I'm happy with the results. Now it's on tho the gray body color.

The chrome bumper looks really nice, did you have it redone ?

Yes David. With these old annuals the chrome parts are usually in rough shape so I almost always have them re-chromed. Even if the chrome is pretty good, a lot of times I just want to get rid of the mold lines. The last time I sent parts off, I got parts for 8 kits re-chromed for about $50.00. Well worth it to me! I'm betting that the '59 Bonneville never came in this color combo, but I like it! :) The gray paint can look a little like primer if the light doesn't hit it right. I had a little trouble spraying this gray. Couldn't seem to get it to spray wet enough, so it's a little rough in texture, but it'll be fine after clear & polish. I'm wondering if the paint sprayed so dry because of the high volume of metal flake in it. Lots of "metallic" in this one!
