kennb Posted March 1, 2013 Author Share Posted March 1, 2013 (edited) Sending the frame off to the paint shop today. Had to do a few last minute things. I installed the wiring harness to the rear lights to make sure all the fasteners were in place properly and all the holes were drilled to run it through the frame. The main body will go to the paint shop this week end for priming, maybe the fenders also. That is the color of the wiring so it will show up on the black. Most of it will not be seen but to make sure it is right I ran the entire harness. One of the things I do not mind doing is going back over parts of the model and redoing them to make it better as I go. I see things in the pictures and as I look at the progress and find things that I need to change, fix, or just do better. The boot lid has been a thorn in my side since it never looked right and had a crack in it so I did it over. This time to make the spare cover more in tune with the size of the tires on the car I used a size D battery fo the male mold and a large bottle cap for the female mold. You can see a fold on the side but since it is going to be cut off it does not hinder the final look. A little sanding on the top left corner and we are good to go. You are very patient in redoing assemblies until you are happy with them and it's important that people see this. It lets them know the work that has gone into this master piece, but also makes it more believable and encouraging to see that even you don't get everything right every time! I have been watching this thread with utter amazement. In fact, I forwarded the link to my entire club! You have pointed out a very inportant fact that when you are working on a car it does not always go right and that you cant be afraid to go back and tear something apart to make it right. When I was doing the Tatra i redid the back 3 times and the front 4 times tearing is all out and redoing it. I have much to post about the process but since I am doing aa final fit today I wanted to jump ahead 2 days for this post and give you a glimps of where I am. I am very pleased on how it is coming out and did a lot of reworking of areas which I will talk about later. But for now I will just add some photos. As you can see I still have a lot of sanding on parts and some fill to go but it is getting really close...................... Soldering guns and dont mix. it always liikes like i have more solder than what i am putting together.I really wanted to have the bars and have them look right and be able to see through them. Wait a minute,,,,if I can see through them it will be the black of the radiator and not anything else. So why would that be critical since i can black out a background, mmm.This is how this attempt went and is, at this point, how I am going to use it. I also will have to ream out some mounting holes for the front horn.. I did not add any clear in as that this is probably as good as they did in the factory. You did fantastic job with it, same thing with the body-it's looking excellent. I really like what you did with the grille. This is one of the threads I come back to see many times a day, it's just so nice to see how styrene bends in your hands. I can't wait to see more. I have never been happy with the out come and a lot of the wiring looks too big. I am using phone wire for this one to see how it works but need to make a cap that will take the wires. I have a piece punched by a hole punch and a dental pick that I heat up for holes. I got a pleasent surprise when I looked at the back side. There was a raised area by each hole that I left when I filed things down. There was also a "tail" that happened when I went through the center for the coil wire and I left that. The photo is not the best but if you look closely you can see the result. I am very pleased with the look and after the wires are in place I think it will look just right. Note that the coil is on the firewall and it will be wired after the body is mounted The body and fenders got sent off to the paint shop for primer today and the chrome goodies went to the chrome shop. they will be done in a few days. I have never done anything like this before and this is my first attempt to see if it is feasable. You are going to see how I can really screw things up now.............................. I set up a test jig out of plastic.............use wood and nails like noted in the tips section......but this was an experiment so it is ok. I set up (what I thought) equal sections and glued posts to the board. with a tube piece and flat pice I made rings to fir the largest inside part of the tire and then small tubes for the inside. I used fishing line for the spokes. Yes, fishing line! I glued it up with super glue useing the round ring on the bottom, and a spacer between layers on the small tube. then the flat ring went over the round one. Huh????????????????????? this is how it looks with the wheel. Acceptable, but not the best but I will go ahead with the final setup and make up 4 wire wheels for this. Note, the fishing line will be suitable to hold the car up and look respectable. I will tighten it up some so there are no wires that are loose like in the test. I didnt let the glue set up long enough and hurried the process. I get impatient some times. Thanks to all those that are watching........................ Still a lot to do before paint......which brings to mind,the colors,,,,,of course British racing green for the most part but I am now thinking about Cream for the lower body and hood. a warm cream color like I used on my 58 Chevy Impala pickup....which I have yet to assemble ...anywya now for the primer pictures. I used a bug sprayer you have to pump up ,,(joke,,,,rattle cans from wally world.......................... . The white cirles are the ghosts that have moved into the car already And once again I wish to thank all those supporting this build by looking or commenting, it makes the build more worthwhile when others can see my attempts at creating this car.
