James Maynard Posted May 7, 2015 Share Posted May 7, 2015 I would like to know the best way to completely remove paint from a model. I got some old already assembled kits from ebay the other day and they look like a 2 year old toddler painted them. And they used a brush to paint the with. If I spray paint over the old paint it will bubble up and look even worse. I want to remove the old paint first. I need to know the best way to do that and get it off of the bodies and even the windows. Any suggestions? One of the car's windows are covered in silver paint. randx0 Posted May 7, 2015 Share Posted May 7, 2015 Check out the tips section there's a lengthy thread covering this subject .soaked ng your parts in super clean or similar degreaser removes most paint, easyoff oven cleaner does also .please use gloves and caution when using Any paint strippers . you can't just paint over a bad paint job it will show. Brett Barrow Posted May 7, 2015 Share Posted May 7, 2015 Oven Cleaner, get the stuff in the yellow can, not the "Fume Free" blue can stuff. Oven Cleaner is safe on clear plastic but the paint itself might have clouded the plastic. I'd probably just sand and polish the paint off the windows if it were mine. av405 Posted May 8, 2015 Share Posted May 8, 2015 I'm actually currently working on an old kit myself. The interior was painted with acrylic paints so Windex window cleaner did the trick. I've tried Easy Off on the outside and it's working VERY slowly but surely. Tomorrow I'm going to buy some Purple Power degreaser and see how that works out as many have seemed to have luck with it. I even got all the paint from the windows. Now my GSX Buick looks great. I just finished it. I want to thank all of you for your help. StevenGuthmiller Posted May 9, 2015 Share Posted May 9, 2015 If the body is brush painted with gloss model paint, such as Testors enamel, (the most likely scenario) soaking it in "Super Clean" will strip it to like brand new within a matter of hours. Give it a soak over night & you'll most likely be amazed! This '59 Bonneville soaked for no more than 3 or 4 hours & this is the result. Same thing with the '67.
