What kit has a good Ford 427 SOHC?

Recommended Posts

I think Ross Gibson's 427 SOHC is quite nice, but the valve covers are missing the "427 SOHC" scripts on the ones I have.

Of all kit Cammer valve covers I have seen only the Johan ones are accurate. Those from AMT are way off.

I have looked at the RG 427 but didn't think it looked any better than the AMT Willys - I am no expert though.

Out of curiosity - and never having built the particular kit - does the Model King Kenz and Leslie Cougar have a 427 sohc? Couldn't quite tell from the box I was looking at today at the LHS.

The shape of the AMT Cammer's valve covers doesn't look right; it is either too tall or not wide enough. It could have been the ribbings that make it looks off, as compared to this public domain photo of the Cammer found in Wikipedia:

630px-Wiki_11_sohc_options_racing.jpg

Dray City Casting used to make a recast of the Johan Cammer valve covers, which looks right.

The Ross Gibson ones appear to have the correct dimension and the right ribbing width, but the blue oval on my examples is very faint and the "427 SOHC" script is missing. However, with the blue oval removed and the ribbings rescribed it represents an early version pretty well.

The valve covers on the engine in the Willys look narrow..the ones in the '66 Galaxie cammer are wider IIRC.

Which Johan kit had a 427 SOHC? The drag version of the Comet and Maverick and the Torino stock car had Boss 429s IIRC.

I'm wondering that too Rob. I know for a fact that the Comet and Maverick had 429 Boss engines. I don't think the Torino stock car would have a cammer since the cammer wasn't allowed in stock car racing.

Looking at pictures of the RG 427 - it looks like the distributor is located a little to far to the driver's side of the block? Also, the Ford emblem on the cover looks small and, as stated above, no "427 SOHC"?

It also appears the AMT valve covers have the Ford emblem too large and they do appear to be on the small side. My 66 Fairlane had the SOHC robbed before i bought it, so...

Anybody have pictures of the Johan valve covers?

Larry's right- there really aren't any 100% dead-on Cammer cam covers, though the '33 Willys ones are about the best avaiable in an easily-found form. The big issue with those is the 'ribs' along the bottom of the cam covers are a bit too pronounced, more closely resembling a surfacing Loch Ness Monster than the actual cam cover's bumps.

All the AMT cam covers I've got are hopeless, being too long, too narrow and too tall. The Johan ones also look wrong to me. They appear to be symmetrical, where the 1:1 covers are a left and a right, with the plug holes offset.

I hacked up the ones from the '33 Willys, making them shorter and wider. They look 100% better proportion wise, but I lost some of the engraving and haven't got around to finessing them yet. I'll dig them out and post a photo if anyone's interested.

The Johan CAMMER from the pro stock Maverick kits is one of my favorites, though it too has a few issues. The oil pan doesnt extend forward enough as it stops before the front timing chain cover is probably the biggest. The most accrate cam covers are found in the old Monogram Tarantula kit.

The JoHan CAMMER............
