  1. Hey guys, long time no see! Over winter, balancing school and sports, I had no time for the hobby, but since school and sports are over for me now, I have time for modeling. This 1966 Chevy Impala SS 396 Hardtop was built between December 2014 and March 2015, because I had little time for building. Since I couldn't spend lots of time on it, I reused a motor from my Grand Sport Corvette kit and various parts from the extras I have. My idea for this car was that someone found a barnfind '66 Impala, that was almost too far gone to salvage, but they did anyways. They only fix the drivetrain, interior and motor, nothing else. Well, here it is, my 2014-2015 winter project. http://media.fotki.com/1_p,rrtwrgswsqwqtrwxsqgdgfwgdqqsb,vi/rkttfwdrwxsddddqdqtxtdtrwsqf/8/3655218/13722148/IMG_6076-vi.jpg The method I used for the paint was to spray the base coat of dark gray primer, rust and then the top color of green. In between the rust and green coat, I wetted the model down, and sprinkled salt onto it. The salt I used was a mixture of shaker salt and Morton's Salt. The shaker salt mostly dissolved, but the larger salt stayed on. After the green was on, I knocked most of it off by hand, but I had to use a toothpick to get it out of tricky spots. On some spots, I just left the salt on to look like bubbly rust. After all the salt was knocked off, I took to the roof, trunk, hood and sides with sandpaper to cut through the coat of green and get the rust coat http://media.fotki.com/1_p,rrtwrgwbkbtkbfsxsqgdgfwgdqqsb,vi/rkdqsbtsqxrtqgrtqkxktrkktdtw/8/3655218/13722148/IMG_6078-vi.jpg http://media.fotki.com/1_p,rrtwrgqkqksgktdxsqgdgfwgdqqsb,vi/fbrrbrfbdxrkdqsbtsqxbwsqrwrtq/8/3655218/13722148/IMG_6087-vi.jpg I took off most of the trim and drilled holes in place. http://media.fotki.com/1_p,rrtwrgwkgdbwwffxsqgdgfwgdqqsb,vi/rtftwsbfxwsffrbtgdxswtffstst/8/3655218/13722148/IMG_6080-vi.jpg To scratch up the bumpers, I just sanded them a little and then painted rust over it and rubbed it off. It worked better than I thought. http://media.fotki.com/1_p,rrtwrgwfgwtgwsgxsqgdgfwgdqqsb,vi/wwgddrsrtxrrsswdfdtxssqrtwrst/8/3655218/13722148/IMG_6082-vi.jpg Here's the engine, which is from the Grand Sport Corvette I was talking about. The front part of the chassis is from a nascar kit, which lined up pretty well, better than I thought. http://media.fotki.com/1_p,rrtwrgwqtwwwrrsxsqgdgfwgdqqsb,vi/dbqfqdfkxrtftwsbfxrbtwwdffs/8/3655218/13722148/IMG_6085-vi.jpg Here's the interior. The floor pans are from the nascar chassis and the decklid was covered by a sheet styrene cover I made. http://media.fotki.com/1_p,rrtwrgqkbrtfwbkxsqgdgfwgdqqsb,vi/kqtwrsstwxrtftwsbfxrdgggqgqr/8/3655218/13722148/IMG_6086-vi.jpg Here you can see where the original chassis ends and the nascar chassis begins. I cut it right after the rear wheel well and glued it together. I had to put tubing on both sides of the chassis to widen it so it could sit right in the shell. Here's the album for this kit. http://public.fotki.com/glennmight/back-from-the-dead-/
  2. Very sharp! Great job on both of those kits. They look awesome.
  3. Hey, I'd like to join with a 1966 Chevelle. It'll be beat up and painted in rusted and mix-matched colors. Have not decided on a engine yet, but the suspension will be upgraded.
  4. I would go with a metallic light-ish blue with silver stripes or a red with black or silver stripes. Or maybe black with flat black stripes... hmmmm
  5. Just checked back in on this build Niko, looks great. The deepness of the red is absolutely gorgeous.
  6. Hope to see future posts about your Cobra, Sandy! Welcome to MCM!
  7. It has a twin turbo EcoBoost 3.5 liter V6 pushing out 600 horses or more (!), with a seven-speed automatic paddleshifter. A lot of people are complaining that "this is America, it should've been a V8" but I don't think they realize that this engine will basically beat any V8 Ford has out right now. It also has adjustable seats, steering wheel and suspension, and also some crazy aerodynamics. I really like the re-styling, you can still tell it's a GT40 but it's changed so much for the better. A real nice car. I'd buy one if I could afford it! I imagine all together it's going to cost something in the ballpark of 70-100k at least. Here's a few pictures I snagged from that article.
  8. Looks great! Keep up the good work. Definitely will be following.
  9. Great job! I really like the wheels. Are the white walls painted or decals? They look really good!
  10. Honestly I enjoy the drawing/painting of the car on top and then photos of the actual model on the side. I enjoy these because 1. the boxtop (if well drawn/painted) would catch your eye to look at it 2. IMHO, it just looks better. Usual the ones of the actual model look really corny and not attractive. I almost never pick up ones that look corny or fake 3. If it's the "retro packaging" I feel like it brings back memories for many people who built that kit as a kid, although they aren't memories for me, I'm sure it's a real wash of nostalgia when you see the box art 4. It also starts putting ideas into your head and almost makes you want to either make it look like the drawing on top or make it better than the one on top. In the end, I feel a drawing/painting is a better choice for a boxtop, sure, the actual model is nice. But I enjoy the drawing/painting boxtops more.
