Whoever designed these instructions would have you believe the 58 Corvette is a 59. And no, the kit doesn't come with the hard top. Only the soft top.

Has pad printed whitewall tires, and decals for them also.

The '59 Corvette Kit had the Hardtop. I am willing to bet that Revell put that page on the instruction sheet by mistake. It would have been nice if they had included the hardtop in the '58 though.

Yes. But it's Revell. This is the typical stupidity that we have all come to accept now. They're just a joke of a company anymore.

No. I really don't. There have been consistent foul ups with a lot of kits recently. I got to talk to Ed Sexton in person about another kit. And with him speaking for Revell, their attitude towards any issues was that they simply did not care.

No excuse for that kind of mistake.

I can see it happening in the aftermarket, where the "company" is one guy. But an actual corporation with employees whose job it is to get it right? Hard to justify that.

This is it right here

"China"

China only does what Revell tells them, but I know, its so much easier to blame to someone else.

Revell has in the past 12 months released a Mustang with a chopped roof, a Cuda with proportional problems, had a run of bad chrome in EVERYTHING that came out of China, famously included 5 spoke Pony wheels on the instructions AND the DECALS FOR THEM, in the '90 LX kit that doesn't include said wheels. Made you buy a gasser kit to get a HT roof for the '62 Corvette, a NASCAR '57 Ford to get the missing Paxton Supercharger parts out of the 1st '57 Ford. How does the Benny Hill theme song not play in the background in Illinois on a continuous loop?

Then at NNL East proceeded to tell people that "no one" complained to them about any of that, because message forums don't matter to them. Then in possibly the most laugh worthy thing ever heard told someone here they could have made the Meng F-350 kit better than Meng did for half the price.

Excuse me while I BWAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! If they could have, why didn't they? Yeah that's what I thought. Get them F-350s while you can they're disappearing faster than people can stock them even at the LHS mark-ups. See that boat over there floating away in the breeze, once again like the concept of any of Moebius' car projects, or new Class 8 Tractors, Revell missed that one too.

Does the '58 kit still have the optional chrome reversed wheels?

Yes! And they are in decent shape!

I have seen the Monogram '58 Corvette. Was their a '59 Corvette by Revell too? Any pics of it?

I think they are very similar in tooling, if not identical-save for the hood and trunk.

Mr. Duff, in his own inimitable fashion, has very nicely called it.

To be fair, they've done some good stuff, too (the1950 Olds and 1957 Ford come immediately to mind,) but whoever is in charge of their R&D/engineering is absolutely asleep at the wheel.

I'm not entirely sure what happened with the Corvette here (could someone please explain exactly what the problem is? I'm under the impression it's more than a missing illustrated part and duplicative WWW decals), but whatever it is, it has once again touched off a firestorm of furor.

Yes, Revell needs to stop missing the boat. Yes, Revell needs to start showing more respect for their customers. Yes, Revell should seriously consider re-patriating production as having everything under one roof again (or at least within driving distance) might help curb a lot of the QA issues, but none of those will matter until production planning, research and product development and engineering (re-) learn how to do their jobs properly.

That means, no major instruction sheet screw-ups, no chopped tops that aren't supposed to be chopped, no more missed contours, etc. Better-grade plastic in the snap kits would also be nice.

It means do your job. Yes, perfect model car kits aren't possible; any product reliant upon the mind of man will have flaws. It is a rule and matter of nature. But major errors, especially given the price a model kit goes for now, is unacceptable.

I'll gladly buy what they do right that interests me. Good efforts- notice I did not say 100% right for the reasons above, but good, solid performance, deserves support.

Would I buy this kit? From what I understand the 1959 Corvette which this kit is based on,is superb. I couldn't act fast enough to get one when they were issued in the late 1990s- the joys of being a broke college kid, but if the rest of this kit is still that good, yes, I'll buy one. I'll learn to deal with the instruction sheet mistakes and extra decals I don't need.

That said, a more complete review of the kit would be appreciated.

I agree with you Charlie. And yes, the only issue is the instructions. This kit is really decent. I've never built the 58 or 59, and am by no means an expert on Corvettes. So I have no idea if it is accurate. And unfortunately, I also won't be able to physically get back to this kit till next week.

So if anyone does take pics and review, feel free to hijack this thread lol.

The '58 was the first issued-- as a 'Pro Modeler' 2n1 version, then the '59 2n1 came a year or so later. IIRC the upholstery patterns differ also. One thing that isn't clear about this reissue--is it stock only, or does it include the optional parts the original issue (which included steel wheels w/ baby moons IIRC) ?

Yep, they're in there, the other building option is a dual carb setup. It's pretty much a straight reissue of the Pro Modeler kit, except for the set of cut-and-fold luggage the PM had on the decal sheet. I think the original PM might have had a second set of tires, this one only has the de-branded Goodyear Power Cushions, now with tampo-printed whitewalls.

The 59 had more modern options including big-inch wheels, a modern fuel-injection setup and radiator with electric fan.

I'm not here to defend Revell (any more than I am to defend any of the other model companies), and you are certainly entitled to your opinion, but there are some statements in here that are, in my view, not accurate.

* The 'cuda kit does not have significant proportional problems. There are about ten minor points in detailing of the body casting, that could be revised to be more accurate. But so are there similar detail mistakes in the '70 'cuda annual kit from MPC and the '71 'cuda from JoHan, kits we held as the "gold standard" up until this kit debuted. On the other hand, there is so much "right" about this kit on so many levels that it deserves every bit the accolades it has received from most modelers, and the near "sell out" sales results so far.

* The conscious decision on the part of Revell to package the roof with the gasser version of the '62 Corvette, and the entire Paxton supercharger with a different kit of the '57 Ford, is a reality of today's model car world, where we get kits that far exceed the detail level of those tooled in the 1960's and '70's, but that sell in a small fraction of the volume that they did back then. Packaging different versions of the basic kit tool in multiple kits offerings (and the increased total sales that result) helps make the new tools affordable. And oh, by the way, a similar business model being is being followed by Moebius and (I'll speculate here on the future...), Meng.

* Most of my Revell kits manufactured in China over the last year have NOT had Chrome plating issues.

* Any debate on Revell should also include mention of the '50 Olds and "57 Ford kits - kits that are among the best new tooled model kits since the turn of the century, IMHO.

Having said that, to err is human, and Revell has certainly had errors, some of which you and others cite above. And that becomes fair game on a forum like this one.

But I felt I had to speak up here to make sure we have a balanced debate. TIM

Now if they could also reissue the '59 as well! My kit is missing strangely enough the one side cove. I guess I could buy the '58 as a parts kit to replace it, but it would be nice to see the '59 come back.

Are the side coves on this kit seperate pieces? That should make painting the side coves easier to paint a different color than the rest of the body. I like that idea.
