Rust in Peace

Came across these while doing a family road trip through Arizona and thought some of you might like them. Enjoy!

The only car I recognize is the '41 Plymouth upside down and I'm not 100% on that one...

I would have taken many, many more pictures but the wife was already honking the horn to get on with the trip.

They were just sittin there in the desert? Can people just take one an try to rebuild it? or are they on State property and unobtainable? That last little sedan, whatever it is, looks like it salvageable, or was it rusted just too thin???

Jairus and I came across something like this in eastern Oregon. I actually remembered it from my childhood in the early 70's. Very cool to see this stuff out there. There was a big push in the late 70's to get rid of this kind of thing, but it is history in my eyes. You don't paint over cave art and you don't scrap old jalopys rusting in the desert.

The one in the Petrified Forest was set there for picture ops at a little parking area referencing Route 66. The others were on what I assumed was private property. There was a lot of glass and debris around them. There was a couple on the way back via I10 but the ladyfolk of the trip were already done with the whole road trip thing and would have thrown a huge fit if I would have stopped. Honestly, they probably would have left my picture happy tail there... The two on the way back were a '55-'57 Ford and a '30s Chevy Coupe The Ford was upside down so I don't know if it was a convertable or crushed hardtop.

There used to be a group of cars that were just off I-5 in Northern CA. (just south of Mt. Shasta) that I "discovered" in the late '60s, actually the people of the area already knew of them, they were cars that had set in a wrecking yard that had been in the area since the early '30s until the mid sixties, (the actual site was taken over by the state to put in I 5 between Dunsmuir & Mt. Shasta). These cars were ones that the owner decided were no longer usable, & he hauled them out into the woods & dumped them the biggest stash I found was while riding around after church one easter with my best friend & his girl friend (now my wife) & my girl friend (I don't know what happened to her) the Union Pacific railroad had taken about twenty cars from the '30s & used them for erosion control in a dip along side the fire trail. We were cruising along about 20 or so when we passed this stack of "tin" & came to a sliding stop, the girls thought we were crazy climbing around in the rust pile still in out suits. The state has since gone in & cleared out all of this hazardous material, but not before we removed several intact bodies, a '33 Chevy 4 door sedan, a '34 Chevy master 5 window coupe, a '37 Willys sedan, & a '32 Dodge 4 door sedan, along with a complete Cadillac LaSalle front sheetmetal group. I think that the official that decide to go through the local area & clean up these should'a been hung!
