The 24 hours of LEMONS!

Alright, so i have been thinking about what would be a really fun build, and came to the conclusion that the build idea would also be a VERY fun community build event.

With that said, fellow modelers, i have come up with a grand idea!

The 24 hours of lemons!!

Just what is the 24 hours of lemons? You take a 4 wheeled vehicle, do some absolutely ridiculous body modifications to it, and you race it on the track!! Their website states the following: The 24 Hours of LeMons is restricted to cars that were purchased, fixed up, and track-prepped for a total of $500 or less.

Here are some fine examples of what some of the cars look like:

The rules are as follows:

1. four-wheeled vehicles

2. painstakingly obvious markings where the tow hooks are.

such an example:

3. full roll cage

4. only one seat (for the driver)

5. post up pics of progress here.

6. have fun!!!!!

here's a link to cars that have raced the lemons. keep in mind the $500 budget did NOT include safety gear, like the roll cage, extinguisher, seat, etc. so that should make it a little easier to find a subject.

Just use your common judgment and make it look like a $500 or less car. The object of the race is to go as long as you can without breaking down.

I haven't determined a deadline yet, but will likely go with the June/July time frame.

Let's see whatcha got!

This looks like the morning commute in South Phoenix.

Other than that, I've got boxes of these... partial builds, tear-downs etc. I could just grab one and shoot some paint on it, glue a Barbie head to it and be done. It seems like a neat idea, but, to me, it also seems kind of vague. The one criterion that makes the 1:1 event a challenge is the $500.00 spending cap. It would be cool if there were a way to reflect a similar restriction in the CBP.

Regards,

David G.

Good thought, David.

Maybe this: Has to be built 100% from one's parts box; no purchasing anything for the build. Would that work for everyone?

Just another thought.

Im in for a parts box build for this. Wanted to build a real one. No one races it in this area.

They have three separate races in Kershaw, SC. Roughly a 6 hour drive from you it's not that bad. You should go out to one of the races you will be hooked.

---

One of the rules needs to be a car you could buy for $500 or less right now. You can't build up a 50's - 70's muscle car because even in parts the car would be worth more than 500. Maybe limit the build to cars that have ran in the Lemons races in the last few years.

good! i'm glad to see there's some interest in this.

to answer some concerns:

i agree, some of the criteria is vague. i believe that the best option is looking through the results from their website. i'll make an amendment to the rules of the original post.

Perhaps you should assign a Lemons supreme court judge (just like at a real race) to decide what is in or out as a legal to build and run the buildup like an actual race since the fun during the race is far more important than the actual finish. The last two Lemons cars I built were built specifically to try and get destroyed by vote. It would be neat to have all the fun of that during the build. Maybe dock people X number of building days for infractions or *gulp* be destroyed before the end of the build, etc.

--

If you haven't read through the rules everyone should read them. They are great.

3.16: Bad-Weather Visibility: It's your job to figure out which bad-weather visibility aids will be most useful for your car. Wipers, Rain-X, tearoffs, small squeegee-wielding children tied to the hood, etc. are all acceptable. If your visibility appears compromised during the race for any reason, you may be black-flagged until conditions improve.

This is funny since I just got back from being on the pit crew for a LeMons Race at Button Willow Race Track. I was working for cars #96 and #102. 96 finished the race and 102 did two laps before it had a catastrophic failure of the engine.

Like the rules say, safety equipment is not included in the price of the car. They include brakes as part of the safety equipment so you can update your brakes but not suspension. But this is Lemons Racing so everyone "cheats" so you'll see a lot of add ons after the car goes through and passes tech. Another thing to consider is to make the car look like it's had penalties such as writing on the cars "I will not spin my car on the track." or have things welded to the roof of the car by the dreaded Archangel. People think this is a cheap race but it really isn't. It's an expensive race; a couple of thousand dollars a race per team.

Can't wait to see what people build. Should be interesting to see the ideas.

oh yeah! can i get in on this? I'm already in two more Community Builds. but i cant pass up this, it sounds like fun. plus i got some part cars i can turn into a lemon. :D

and just a thought since these cars don't have to be in show condition. can we make the deadline lets say a month from the starting point? that way it will keep every ones interest going, and we can show are builds a lot faster and vote. just my 2 cents. if not whatever deadline you choose is fine :D

edit: didnt see this thread was a month old. so can i still get in on this?

I completely lost track of this community build.

I suppose I could reinitiate it.

However I will be removing the deadline so those interested can do at their leisure and anybody can join.

I gotta find a $500ish looking car then get started on it. Maybe a ford escort or Chevy citation..
