Superbird's and Daytona's what are the best kits ?

Its hard to go wrong with the Revell 69 Daytona in either Pro Modeler or standard issue version. The Monogram/Revell 70 Superbird isn't a bad kit but the only version that has the correct decals is the older "Petty" version. The JoHan 70 Superbird has a great body but the chassis has molded in detail, it can be swapped out for the chassis/engine from an AMT68 RR or 69 GTX. The AMT 69 Daytona is best avoided, the nose fits poorly and the chassis detail is lacking, though again the chassis can be swapped with the AMT 68 RR or 69 GTX.

Not really a lot of choice out there. The ultimate Superbird is the hard to get JoHan body with a AMT 69 Roadrunner chassis.

I like the RM Superbird but it's 1/24 and as stated only the 'Petty' version has the 'Birds'.

Stock Daytona....agian only one real choice...RM kit. AMT kit is a chopped up version of the MPC kit which was never issued in stock trim. It makes a OK start for a race car....but that's about it.

Two movie Plymouths.....both RM kits....

Why they said. The Revell 1/25 '69 Daytona is a great kit, while the AMT kit should be avoided altogether.

If you don't have a lot of kitbashing enxperience and want a nice straight-out-of-the-box build, pick up the current 1/24 ex-Monogram '70 Superbird kit.

I have suggested more than once that Polar Lights next step after the 1/16th Petty Charger, is to modify the General Lee body into a Daytona and put out a 1/16th Charger Daytona NASCAR. Seems to me a logical choice to get mileage out of the tooling. B)

No, that wouldn't be a good decision at all. Dukes of Hazzard labelled anything is a near-guranteed sale, and a 1/16 Daytona in any form wouldn't come close in sales numbers. There's a reason the 1/25 MPC DOH kit has sold more than any other, and it's not because it's a quality kit.

It is a nightmare to build.

I'd not say a nightmare.......not a good choice for a factory stock build....but a decent NASCAR Racer can be built. And since the NASCAR guys molded in the nose cone it makes a better race car. The RM Daytona requires MAJOR surgery to fit race wheels and tires under it. A ton less work with the AMT/MPC kit warts and all.

I don't know if I would go that far. The 1/16 General Lees have been big time shelf sitters around my neck of the woods, probably because the thing isn't exactly a General Lee. It is sort of a race car, sort of a street car. Sure, in the show the General Lee was that, but except for the welded doors, it was a lot closer to a stock charger than what you get in the General Lee offering.

Personally, I think a Charger Daytona or Superbird body would be a pretty cool addition to that kit myself. I've also been considering what it might take to turn my General Lee kit into Jim Vandiver's #3 Charger (not a Daytona) from the 1969 Talladega 500. It was a pretty slick looking machine in Nascar warpaint.
