bbowser
My latest project is Cale Yarborough's #11 Holly Farms Laguna owned by Junior Johnson. Does anyone know what color the interior was in this car? The typical 'gloss gull gray' as in later cars or were they doing something different in 1976? I'm also searching for the proper orange shade for the car. I've got a can of Krylon called 'John Deere yellow' that looks reasonably close? Any comments/suggestions welcome! bbowser
Yeah, I would think black wouldn't work so well. Red sounds more plausible. Where do you go for reference photos? I did a Google image search but didn't find anything with an interior shot.
bbowser
Thanks Jacen. I've got some vintage stock car books as well but apparently interior shots weren't very popular!
bbowser
Looks black to me.
Ken#5fan
The correct color is black. Most of Junior Johnson's car ran black interiors up into the 80's. Hope I helped you out.
bbowser
Thanks guys. Any ideas on the engine? Was it unpainted aluminum block & heads? I doubt they were Chevy red.

Found this on Randy Ayers board. You're right Ken, black interiors. Must have been an oven in there!
Haubenschild
Have you looked at Mcwautomotive finishes for the orange paint? , they may have it
roadhawg
Thanks guys. Any ideas on the engine? Was it unpainted aluminum block & heads? I doubt they were Chevy red. I wouldn't doubt that at all. I saw some of Elliott's blocks back around '83- '84, and they were Ford blue. I don't have a lot of knowledge about Cup cars, but I WAS involved in dirt and asphalt short track at the time, and my best guesstimation is the block would have been black or bare cast iron, maybe Chevy orange. The heads, probably bare cast iron. The oil pan, probably black, possibly bare steel. I would bet that if you went with any combination of that, no one would ever argue with you. They definitely were not aluminum, though. Not in the 70's. Only the intake was aluminum at that time.
bbowser
I knew a 'good old boy' would have the answer. Thanks Tommy. I wasn't sure if maybe Junior painted all his engines some color to make them stand out?
roadhawg
Well, that I would not know but it's possible. A lot of racers painted everything black because it was supposed to dissipate heat better. Others just left everything unpainted. If you choose THAT route, you can get cast iron spray paint at any auto parts store.
