OK, what ever ya do on the new Model A kits, let's not get carried away.

The second coupe in the line up is a very well engineered street driver, it belongs to a great builder who was shown on a one season TV show with Jimmy Shine from So-Cal speed shop in a search for a new apprentice at the shop.

Got any pictures ?

Name of this great builder ?

Name of the one season tv show?

That is the Deathtrap. it looks like it may fall apart driving down the road but it is a very well engineered car. Built by a guy named Dave Lohr. AKA Littleman. Do a Google image search for Deathtrap Model A and construction photos will pop up. just be aware when you are looking there is a clone that was built a few years after the original and you have to look close to tell them apart.

Littleman also built this truck. Link is to a Hot Rod Magazine online article. http://www.hotrod.com/cars/featured/hrdp-1001-1931-ford-model-a-pickup/ and yes he is the guy that was on the TV show Hard Shine, won, and turned down the job at So Cal speed shop.

The Model A coupe that was pictured first in the original post, I would have to look up the article in Rod and Kulture magazine but IIRC it is a driver as well. Driven hard and often if the article is correct.

I absolutely detest rat rods. I would hate for someone to look at a car like that and think "Oh thats the best car he can build" and have my name connected with a car like that. Stuff like crappy welds random junk bolted onto the car and crappy build quality intentionally overall is something I find idiotic. The guys who build them and say "this is how it was built back in the day". That is BS. show me one picture that was taken back in the forties or early fifties that shows me a hot rod with any of the tractor seat, car dropped way down so its a half an inch off the ground, chain links welded together for a steering wheel, rusty barbed wire wrapped around things, etc. I guarantee you will not find one.

What I do not have an issue with is to hot rods that show some use. Stone chips and road rash are a badge of honor as far as I'm concerned. Drive 'em hard, drive 'em far. And if they break, fix 'em and drive on. I would bet that a lot of these rat rods in real world road conditions wouldnt last 50 miles without a major breakdown or mechanical failure.

The coupe Toner 283 refers to as the "Deathtrap" is actually called "Death's Doorstep". The other info appears to be correct. It's pretty awesome :D

I'm surprised that people hate on the Von Minden coupe (top photo posted by the OP). Sure those headlights are goofy, but the car is gnarly. Not every car needs to be a beauty queen. I love that one. Here it is on the street (kind of insane considering the skinny front wheels):https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipkUt1v0IQ4

As for the "Little Boy" rat-rod coupe (named after the Bomb....not very subtle there), if you replaced the wheels and grille with something more conventional (read: boring) and re-did the interior in thin-pleat tuck n roll, and painted it, you'd have a spot-on 60s style show rod. The 60s Barris Surf Woody had a twin-paxton centrifugal blower setup as well.

When the car first debuted, I thought "well that's it, I'm out. These rat rods are getting stupid now".

Years later, now that rat rods are _really_ ridiculous, I can appreciate this car for all the vintage parts and crazy concepts the builders packed into one build. The proportions are awesome, if stubby.

Here's an article that describes the cool parts and attention to detail in the car.

Anyway...when the 30 coupe is finally released, I will be building a range of styles. For some of them, I ABSOLUTELY intend to get carried away. Hoo boy.

Doh. My bad, Brainfart on my part. Spex is right. Deaths Doorstep is the correct name of that coupe.

That last Coupe in Greg's post #40 is probably one of the nicest in the whole thread so far. Including the American Graffiti Coupe whichever though fairly period correct has some visual flow issues for me, the height of the grill shell looks like it's going down hill. For a whole generation (myself included) the AG Coupe is an Iconic representative of early '60's Hot Rods, so we overlook the styling miscues, even if a serious Hot Rodder's would have tweeked them to look good back then.

Too many decent, well built Nostalgia, Period Correct, Traditional Hot Rods get "Branded" as a Rat Rod because the builder thinks patina and rust looks good. That's what ruins it for me, being raised around Hot Rodders during the early '60's where they cleaned, painted and shined up everything that went on their Hot Rods. Both my Uncles had nice Model A Coupes, (couldn't afford Deuces I guess) from what I remember there wasn't a lick of Rust or caked grease on them, (my brothers and I were enlisted more than once as parts washers, free labor, the price a kid had to pay to hang around in the garage) so maybe that's what ruins it for me.

Like someone posted, it's their car, build it the way you want to; maybe. Hot Rodding has and has had some long standing traditions, ugly flaking, faded paint, heavy rust, holes in bodywork, grease and caked on grime haven't been a part of that picture until lately. Sort of like "Historical Revision" where something didn't happen that way historically, but is changed in the history books because what really happened wasn't politically correct!!

I guess it's really a matter of intention in proportion to budget. I love the rust and grime for this reason: Rust is what's available now. Many years have past and a 32 body is significantly rustier now than it would have been in1960, hence, a considerable amount of budget would be spent bringing the car up to a standard that the guy in 1960 found in a junkyard. So in the spirit of going fast and looking cool on a budget, the rust and grime is perfectly acceptable and cool IMO. However, the chain steering wheels, spider webs and barbed wire ruin it, and do not fall in line with the hot rod ethos.

Aesthetically it's all about proportion and balance. No matter if you built one in 1960 or 2016. Some builders have an eye for it, some don't. Iv'e seen pics of some real ugly track roadsters from back in the day and some of the salt flat guys would tape cardboard to the nose for more speed.

I was gonna say the same thing, that it's Death's Door Step....

I too detest the entire culture dubbed as "Rat Rods", don't like the title because they are not, they are hot rods plain and simple!!! I like a lot of them that I see just don't like the title they've been given...

My plans for one will use the image below as the plan, with the I6 from the AMT '51 Chevy. And some styling changes.

The second one I build will be a modern take using the Phantom Vicky chassis/engine/suspension and a track racer theme.
