Kennyboy
Hey guys, time for the next build to start........this will be a one-of-a-kind build (in the model car community). The Gullwing America 340 Competizione. The closest kit to this was an Renwal 1/32 (38?) 1956 340 America. I have decided to build this car using several(!) different bodies all cut up and glued/fitted together. My build will also differ from the 1:1 car slightly. Going to run different wheels and an Enzo chassis and driveline. Here is the car in question........ I have begun this build already and although it is VERY rough at the moment, it is starting to take shape. Someday we will look BACK at these and laugh!! Right now it is just somewhat sad....... Shardik
I'm not laughing , I'm stunned . I'm blown away by your ability to find the necessary shapes in other vehicles and patch them together in a contiguous whole. I mean...'57 chevy tailfins for the front fenders ?! Really!?! Jordan 191
I love that the three starting pieces aren't just random cars, but three ICONIC shapes. It's wonderful.

Plasticfanatic
MAGNIFICENT start and very cool project, I always liked the original design of the 1950's Ferrari 340 Mexico. Looking forward to see more updates.

blunc
hey Ken, if you can scrounge a spitfire-gt6, it looks like the windshield-roof may be a better starting point than the beetle section you have mocked up.

Deathgoblin
Looks like the grille section from a Cobra. Good work so far. Keep it up.

Kennyboy
This will be awesome, mind if we post the progress shots on Instagram and allow some others to follow? No problem, go ahead. I wish that one of the model companies had made a kit of this at one time in the past. It certainly would have been justified! Looks like the grille section from a Cobra. Good work so far. Keep it up. You are correct. I cut and relocated the headlight buckets downward.

Wish I could have, I ended up re-creating the roof using the front half of the 57 chevy roof and the backhalf of a 57 t-bird hardtop. Sides are still VW though. Another artwork is being born... Thank you Damir for the wonderful comment!
Ace-Garageguy
The 1:1 is pretty bizarre, and though I'm not a real fan of the 'styling', an accurate model would be quite an accomplishment, and a standout for sure. What's the story on the 1:1? It's obviously not a real period piece.

The car was originally based off of the 1952 Ferrari 340 Mexico, then it was fitted with many new items: wheels/tires, brakes, suspension, new interior, paint and body upgrades, lighting (led tails, xenon headlights). As far as I know, there are three of these 1:1 cars......1 is red, 1 satin black, and 1 was done in the PanaAmericana race theme. This car piqued my interest because the upgrades were done very tastefully to add to the original beauty of the car and make it that much more stunning. A REAL 1952 Ferrari Mexico brought $4.3 MILLION in 2011. It's pretty hard to believe this car is actually "based" on a real one...probably a re-creation, custom-creation. Very interesting and the craftsmanship appears to be outstanding...but I still seriously doubt an original car would be hacked into a custom at this point in history. Do you have ANY more info on it...a weblink, a name, anything ?? EDIT: Found it... Using a Ferrari 456 platform as a base, GWA Tuning was able to bring the classic 340 Mexico Berlinetta to modern times. This 456 platform was re-bodied by Coach Building master, Mark Nungent, from Australia. The body was then fixed up with a new diffuser, rear spoiler, side vents, and front splitters, all from newer Ferraris. The body was also stretched by about 15 inches (mostly in the middle) to fit the new platform, but the wheelbase remained the same. http://www.topspeed.com/cars/ferrari/2011-ferrari-340-mexico-berlinetta-by-gwa-tuning-ar115683.html Edited October 7, 2013 by Ace-Garageguy
Kennyboy
The only other info I know is Gullwing America is the designer. If you type that name in you get other cars they re-designed other than this one. One of them is a Porsche 907 Carrera.......another very expensive piece. EDIT: Thanks to Bill (above) for looking up the story on this.....there was a lot of preparation prior to the start of this build and although I should have, I did not look up the story of the specifics on this car.
