'63 Avanti For Bonneville (The Salt Licker)

This is one that I'm building for a friend of many of ours on the forum, Clay Jones. As many of you know, Clay and his wife are real Studebaker enthusiasts. They even own an Avanti that needs a "bit" of restoring.

Here's the twin Paxton supercharged R5 engine that'll power this bad Stude down the flats. I've added the oil fill tube and the dipstick to this side of the R5. Yep, I painted the fan its signature orange color.

Part of the reason for this build was to show Clay how to make wire hinges. Here's the very simple hinge for the hood.

And here's the hinges for the doors. There are small pieces of aluminum tubing glued to the inside of the doors that the brass rods slip into. When done this way, they close and open well, and won't sag when you open them like the plastic ones in the kit do.

On the bottom I added U bolts, retainer plates for the rear end and some simple brake lines.

Here's a few pics of how it looks this morning after I shot the base coat of clear on it. Check out those nasty roof rails that'll help keep this one going in a straight line!! I still need to add the decals and shoot the final coat of clear later this week.

Well, another couple weeks of paint cure time, a bit of final assembly and this one will be in the mail!

Great look Stude, are you going to do any sort of graphics? Is its going to be finished by Stockton?

Thanks, Michael...I should have it finished in 2-3 weeks. When is the next Stockton show?

Very nice Raul. Another masterpiece.

Well, Milt, I don't know that I'd call this one a "Masterpiece", but it is coming along nicely, seeing how it was born from an old AMT kit and I haven't modified it much. I'm just trying to show Clay how to do a few things.

Thanks, Nick and Rollin!! I like the way this one is coming along for what is mostly a box-build.

July 13, October 12, and December 7

Okie Al has a show on June 7 at the Merced fairgrounds.

You going to Good-Guys on May 31 or June 1?

I should be able to make all of the except for Okie Al's on June 7th. That's my grandfather's 88th birthday and I'll be spending most of the day with him.

Here's a quick pic of the car with the decals on it. I'll clear it in the morning after they've had time to completely dry.

That Loewy-liner is just sittin' in the race shop waitin' to be buttoned up. I, for one, can't wait for it's completion. Another on-the-money build is waiting in the wings! Very nice, indeed!

Thanks, Bernard!! My biggest worry at this point is getting it packaged well enough that it doesn't get damaged in transit. I sure don't want to piss-off a Marine...even if he is a friend.

Ohhh wow, really cool!!!! How about a big STP decal on the hood, as a tribute to Andy Granatelli...? I'm reading his book again; "They call me Mr 500" It's such a cool book, something every car nut should read!

Close!! The headlamp covers will be painted white and the STP decals will go on each of them.

Yes, I'm old enough that I remember seeing Andy race when I was just a young whipper-snapper!! My dad was really into racing, so we'd watch any kind of races whenever they came on TV. I'll look for the book the next time that I go to the local book store.

Thanks,

You going to add some salt to it?

Probably not...I was thinking that I'd leave it looking like it just came out of the trailer, ready for its first morning run down the salt...that way you can see how the paint is finished. The bottom is already weathered a bit, but not too much.

This is the look I was going for...out of the trailer, ready for its first run...

:) Other than the rear end not beein quite as high, looks like you nailed it Bro.Great job! Now wheres mine?:lol::blink:

I don't like it that high in the back...it just doesn't look "right". Maybe Clay will let you have this one when he's done looking at it...

way cool bro good job steping out of the box bro

im planning on watching this one and posting up stuff (good stuff)

so keep the pics coming bro i wanna see more

Well, this one really isn't too far from box stock. Just a few minor additions here and there...

If you want to see "Out of the Box" thinking, wait until you see the "Roth" inspired car I've started...
