  1. OK GUYS I TRIED YOUR TIPS USING BRAKE FLUID DOT 3 IT DID THE TRICK BUT NOW THE PLASTIC HAS A RIPPLE EFFECT I TRIED RECOATING BUT THIS IS STILL SHOWING THROUGH THE PAINTWORK. TO BE HONEST I AM GIVING UP ON IT TILL I HAVE SPOKEN TO THE SHOP I BOUGHT IT FROM. I HAVE A FUNNY FEELING IT WAS A REACTION ON THE FIRST COAT OF PAINT AND THE PLASTIC I HAVE TRIED PUTTING A LIGHT COAT OF TS 17 LEAVING FOR 24 HRS BUT EVERY TIME I APPLY THE SECOND COAT A GREY OR BLACK APPEARS WERE THE KIT HAS RIPPLED MY ONLY THOUGHT IS THAT IT MUST BE THE PLASTIC AND PAINT REACTING BUT WHY AFTER THE SECOND COAT HEAVEN ONLY KNOWS.
  2. Thanks for that I tried to sand it down but found it quicker to scrape it i am worried about the loss of panel detail if i was to go up in grade of sandpaper also the model is tamiya and the paint is tamiya i will try to get some photos posted to let you see what the problem is. even after scraping there are areas that this grey matter are keyed to the surface although the plastic surface below this is intact very strange.
  3. Hi to all I need your help guys. I went to take the decals off of my current project a TAMIYA CLK GTR(SEE POSTING DISSAPEARING DECALS) I USED TAMIYA TS 17 Gloss aluminium from the tin. On taking off the decals the colour from the decal had run and i needed to remove the paint as well. i used a product called Model strip it is a paste you apply and it strips the paint from the model without affecting the plastic surface. I removed the model strip today after 10 hrs of application to find the paint removed and a matt grey undersurface this was rough and started to bubble when the model was drying i have just finished scraping this off the front section finding the original base plastic below this surface of grey well god knows what it is. i swear if the model had to be a matt grey finish i would have done an ace job no primer has been used so i am at a loss as to were this colour has come from and i am not aware of a paint that applies a primer coat during normal application. what is the solution to this problem as i got so close to completion of this model to take six steps back it really grinds my gears. your tips or advice on this would be appreciated. P.S. I have used model strip on a model which has been painted with enamel paint and was on the model for 3 years prior to me stripping it is good stuff but i am totally bamboozeled
  4. COULD WELL BE DO THEY TAKE THEM TO THE DARKEST RECESSES THAT NO ONE CAN SEE? PERHAPS IT IS A PARELLEL UNIVERSE !
  5. Here in the U.K. I use humbrol paints no.85 Coal Black it applies well has a smooth finish without being shiny and it has that slight blueish tinge built in. it is enamel based though so i would watch if using acrylics.
  6. THANKS FOR YOUR REPLYS GUYS TO ANSWER SOME OF YOUR POINTS THE MODEL IS VERY MUCH BOX STOCK NO AFTER MARKET PARTS WERE USED. THE PAINTS WERE TAMIYA ACRYLICS WHICH WERE X RERENCED FROM MODEL MASTER COLOURS. I ACTUALLY THOUGHT I HAD USED THE WRONG COLOUR ON THE MAIN BODY BUT LATER DISCOVERED I HAD USED THE RIGHT ONE THE IMAGES I WAS USING FROM THE INTERNET WERE FOR THE WRONG YEAR. I TOTALLY AGREE THAT THESE COMPETIONS SHOULD BE FUN BASED I UNFORTUNATLY DONT GET TOO SERIOUS ABOUT MY MODELLING. AND INFACT I AM ONLY ENTERING THE COMPETITION BECAUSE MY MODELLING BUDDY WOULD ONLY ENTER IF I ENTERED.(HE HAS ISSUES WITH SELF CONFIDENCE FOLLOWING A BREAKDOWN) HE GETS SOO IN TO DETAIL AND MANUFACTURING HIS OWN PARTS HE HAS BEEN DOING IT FOR 40 YEARS. HOPEFULLY A WIN FOR HIM WILL BOOST HIS SELF CONFIDENCE. I WILL TAKE YOUR POINTS ON BOARD AND LET YOU KNOW HOW IT ALL WENT
  7. I am entering a local competition for modellers and as it is my first time i was wondering if there are any does and donts involved in this as far as i can see all i need do is pay my entry fee (it is even subsidised) place my model on the table for judging and pick it up the following day some of you more experienced modellers may be able to give me some pointers to improve my chances.(and save me from embarising myself) incidently it is a motorbike I am entering in 1:9th scale although i tend to do cars but it looks so nice and i am happy with it
  8. I am completly baffled how can decals just dissapear? I have been doing a model on and off for the last 6 months. It has tried me in various ways fitting etc. Well last night I went to apply the main decal to the body it fitted well and all looked good part 1 and 2 of micro sol were applied happy with the applications i went to have a coffee to give it time to work on returning an are about 1cm square had simply dissapeared.Luckily today the model shop i bought the model from said they would contact there rep and get a replacment set for me halleluya! Have any of you guys been visited by the dissapearing decal fairy ? do you know of a decal fairy capturing device ? Why do they take them? What do they do with them?
  9. As I said earlier great help thanks especially to the link supplied by bill geary. It was passed on to one of my modeling buddies today. He had problems with a kit he had spent ages (5 months) on. On applying the canopy( he is in to military avation) it fogged.Unfortunatly anger got the better of him and in 30 seconds his kit was a pile of black and yellow bits. You should have seen his face when he read the solutions you guys provided he is away to the hardware store to get some household ammonia as he has a project in his loft that had an oops! Many years ago but he is going to give it a try. Scott Hadden
  10. well you learn something new every day. I must admit I havent heard of the products you speak of. Formula 560 etc. it may only be available in the U.S. The other products are universal and I must admit I would not think of using that on Models. Thanks for that guys I will suggest it to my modeling buddies and see if I cant get a hold of that Formula 560 as it seems to be specific to that job.
  11. Hi to all I thought I had read on here that to solve fogging problems caused by Glue you should use Pure Amonia. I hunted today and couldnt see it. I and my felow modelers would be interested to know if any other modeler had done this? And was it a success? Apparently you apply it with Q Tips and if paint and or Klear has been applied before glueing then it doesnt affect the applications. Would be interested to know if any of you guys had any knowledge of this?
  12. HI TO ALL I have recently taken up modelling (2 years ago) and my latest project is the Tamiya Mercedes Benz gtr-clk. On googling for info pics etc. I came across Bill Atridge's column from the Nov/Dec 99 issue. Unfortunatly it only lists the work carried out and a few finished pics.I have 2 questions how can I obtain a back issue of this article and I noticed that Bill uses the Sakatsu Dress up kit. On hunting I found 1 supplier in Japan with a delivery time of up to 5 weeks. Do any of you fellow modelers have a local supplier of Sakatsu after market parts as here in the U.K.(Especially in Scotland) the modeler has far to travel just to get the Model itself. I enquired with Models Unlimited in Inverurie but they do not deal with Sakatsu. I also tried as far as Edinburgh both Marionville and Wonderland dont have this part as it is discontinued. Please help me as the finished article look well like WOW!
