Manufacturer logo decals...

Recommended Posts

Wouldn't it be cool if one of the decal manufacturers had the licensing rights to produce decal sheets with the "big three" American manufacturer logos? I.E., one sheet with pentastars, ram heads, Dodge and Plymouth block script billboards; another with blue and gold bow ties, USA-1 plates, heartbeats; and one with blue ovals, "have you driven...", etc. Make and model scripts, different body emblems through the years... but I suppose the licen$ing to produce something like this would be killer. Couldn't hurt to run the idea past you guys.

You're correct on both, good idea, but due to licensing, expensive. I was just thinking though, I'd bet many here have just that in their decal stash. Through the years so many kits have just what you're talking about.

I also think that it would be pretty cool if some enterprising aftermarket company would make a PE set or sets of generic numbers (0 through 9) and alphabet letters in caps (A through Z). Maybe have like 3 of each number and letter in a set. I think this would be a welcome addition for detailing models. I thought of script letters too but I think they would be too difficult to line up straight on a model.

Rich, for generic letters and numbers, I have used dry transfers. Hobby Lobby, an art supply store or a good model railroad shop should have them. Apply them to a clear decal sheet, then slap that on the model. You can make very faint guide lines on the decal sheet to keep things lined up. I did this on the tow truck and the '40 Ford roadster pickup. I do like your idea about PE characters. Try archertransfers.com- they have some neat stuff.

I think it would be great to have a sheet of metal transfers with emblems and scripts for, say, a particular car maker. So you could get GTO, Skylark, and Camaro (GM products) on one sheet.

I have some for Honda and Ford that I purchased from China - so, licensing legally might be a set back.

For decals, licensing might not be as prohibitive because it's a lower-value item.Same thing with photo-etch.

I know of a couple of decal guys who have been able to simply get permission from GM for very short runs (150-200 sets) with minimal charges, as they weren't going to be making that much on it, anyway, so they cut them a break.

Might be worth investigating if something can be arranged reasonably.

Can you go into detail about how this transpired? This sounds like an urban legend to me, and not like the difficulties I've read about for other cottage industry suppliers. (Granted, they didn't ask first and the corporate copyright police pounced on them.) But I can't imagine GM taking the time or effort to respond to such a small request, and I haven't heard of a case like this before. It's just unusual in the extreme.

I know that "globaltoy" on ebay has numerous logos. I have some Ford blue oval and a Ferrari logo. One sheet has many sizes. I would wonder if they get around licensing issues because they are in China.

Same place I got mine. The "metal" decals are

actually metal transfer - they are 3 dimensional and chrome.

I would think the licensing problems wouldn't be expense or whatnot, but rather the various manufacturers refusing to all be lumped into one decal sheet like that.

Well, it wouldn't have to be different manufacturers on one sheet, perhaps just one sheet for each of the "Big Three". All Ford on one, all Chrysler on another and all GM on another. I know that MCG has some beautiful PE stuff for specific cars; I wonder if they could do some generic stuff for the different manufacturers. No door handles, locks, trim, etc- just logos and emblems,
