Stock hood for '69 AMX

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if a "Stock" hood for the '69 AMX available .

Would like to transform the Shirley Shahan Drag-On-Lady into a "stock" AMX.

As far as I know this is the only 1/25 option out there.

Also, are there any backward conversions kits/parts that will take the Shahan '69 kit to a '68 AMX.

The hood in mine was a stock '69 hood, just with the scoop holes in it. Fill those and you're golden.

What are the differences between a '68 and '69? IIIRC the '68 was a mid-year introduction and I don't think there were many if ANY differences for '69.

The Modelhaus site is down so I can't check but I know they do have SOME '68-'70 Javelin and AMX stuff. I think the only hood they offer is the '70 AMX, with the scoop.

You'll need an interior bucket too. The Shahan drag version (first issued in 1971) was backdated from the '70 AMX. Jo-Han backdated the body and put the early dashboard back in, but left the '70 interior bucket.

The USA Oldies AMX has the '70 interior bucket also. Jo-Han made some changes to the body from the Shahan drag version (put the rocker panel trim back on, among other things) but they didn't address the interior.

All of the two-seater AMX kits prior to the 1971 issue Shahan drag car were produced by Jo-Han but sold in AMT packaging. The '68 was sold in one box, the '69 and '70 in two for each year (all with different artwork and stock numbers). There are two versions of the "early" interior bucket; one has headrests molded with the seats, the other has no headrests. The no-headrests interior would be the earlier of the two. I don't know whether the change was phased in, or if it was made for the '69 kits.

If you decide to try backdating the interior yourself, if you cut out the molded-in seats then you should lower the floor section that is behind the seats so as to make it level with the section ahead of them. Jo-Han probably cheated that a bit to make the one-piece interior easier to mold.

I just checked my '69 AMX annual kit (the first of the two issues of the '69 that were sold in AMT packaging). No headrests. However, I've got one 1969 dealer promotional model and one 1969 toy-store friction AMX...both of those have the headrests. Based on this, I'd guess that the "annual box" 1969 kits (Y922) were produced before the 1969 promotional models. Kits sold in the second box (T294) would probably have been produced later, and so would have headrests on the seats. I've got the box for the T294 issue but not the contents, so I can't verify that.

The headrests were indeed a January 1, 1969 mandate. Some other 1969 kits, like the reissue Chevelle convertible, don't include them.

FWIW, my Y922 kit have the headrests. However, I have no idea of the history of the contents of the kit as this was bought off ebay some 10 yrs ago.

Then there may have been two (or more) production runs of the Y222 boxed kit, one before the change and more kits after. I didn't look at any catalogs to see if both appeared together in any of them.
