topher5150
This is in refrence to my "Trans Am Mustang" build http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=92375 I need some help with fabbing up some of the roll cage. I've been hacking and cutting at the roll cage for a while now, and I've got most of it to fit, except for the part that runs from the main structure behind the drivers seat, runs the length of the roof and down to "A" pillar, and meets up near the dash. The donar NASCAR roll cage that I'm referring to is way to narrow and looks weird sitting that far from the "A" pillar. My problem is that the roof loop is ellipsed in the front behind the wind shield. I want it to look the same but not sure how to go about bending plastic like that, especially with out any tension trying to pop it out of place. I'll get pics tomorrow
topher5150
I tried cutting a section out in the center to make it fit in width wise, but it tapers to much to the front.
Ace-Garageguy
There sometimes comes a point where the cage you want to modify is just too different in shape from the car you want to fit it to. That's when it's time to get some styrene rod of the right diameter and begin learning a new skill...building your own cages from scratch. I've been in the same situation you're in now, and it was frustrating. The idea of scratch-building a cage also seemed like it would be difficult. In reality, it turned out to be not too bad, and the more you do, the easier it gets. There is some great advice and tips on the forum as to how to go about it, and once you try it, your roll cages will always fit. This is a good one to start on, as building just the upper and cross tubes to fit your rear hoop won't be too bad, and it's going to be easier than modifying what you have into something that is symmetrical and looks good. kitbash1
I'm building the same T/A Mustang. Here's the roll cage that I built using Evergreen rod and tube. I used a roll cage from a NASCAR kit as a basic guide and built my cage on a jig, where I could bend and glue the tubes.
MitchP
Bill's right: Sometimes you need to stretch your skills with these kits, especially with cages. I got help with a nice tutorial here: http://www.modelcarsmag.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=72815. Doug's cage is nice too. I wish I had an easy way to build a jig as I build pretty much the same basic cage for pro mod cars which are supercharged conversions of the Revell "pro sportsman" series. The hardest trick for me was getting used to using a candle to heat the Evergreen rod to the right angle without going overboard. I've heard there are other methods like hair dryers, soldering type guns which put out a much lower heat to allow more precise bending. Good luck. Mike_G
Use a piece of aluminum rod- it bends easily and can be joined with 5-minute epoxy.
