Removing Paint from Resin

Hey all,

Has anyone ever tried using 91% isopropyl alcohol to remove paint from resin? Seems to me that the alcohol would not have the same destructive properties other methods of paint removal would have.

I tried denatured alcohol on a resin part and it did destroy it.

I tried using 91% alcohol to strip paint off of an MCW resin and ruined the car. I have successfully used Castrol to strip paint off Modelhaus resin. Even after a couple of days it was okay.

Resin can be tricky; and so can paint strippers. The wrong combo results in a ruined model.

What kind of paint needs to be stripped? How bad is the paint? Unless it's a total disaster, and if it doesn't come off w/Easy Off Heavy Duty if it is a total disaster, I'd fix the problems with careful sanding (and perhaps some work on dressing/scribing the panel lines) and use what's on it now as a primer for a better coat of paint.

ive stripped resin from a couple manufacturers with super clean more than once, with no ill effects whatsoever.

but whats that that is often said? ah yeah, test first.

I've used PollyS paint remover on Modelhaus resin and had no problems. Still, I wouldn't let the part soak for longer than necessary.

I use

Castrol Degreaser or Super Clean degreaser.It's a in purple bottle found at Walmart. Comes off without destroying the resin. Soak for about 30 mins of more. If stubborn, use a soft toothbrush to loosen hard paint off of resin.
