Purple Power - Where Can I Get It???

Recommended Posts

SOmeone was saying that as an alternative to Easy Off Oven Cleaner, he uses a product called "Purple Power". I have looked for it in grocery stores here inmy area but I can not find it. I find the fumes from Easy Off to be pretty wicked so I want to try an alternative and this stuff is supposed to work great. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. :):D:D

I think the Purple Power is actually a product call Castrol Super Clean, or CSC for short. I don't know about up there, but it is readily available here in the states at most auto parts stores.

Gary, I believe Purple Power is WalMart's answer to Castrol Super Clean.

Be sure to wear gloves - nasty stuff.

Yeah, and use in a well ventilated area, too, because it has harsh chemical fumes, too. A friend of mine uses CSC for a stripper in an old pot with a glass lid. He took the lid off it one night while I was there, and it almost made me sick!

There actually is a brand called Purple Power. I think you are confusing it with people calling both "the purple pond". Coincidentally Purple Power iis the bargain brand of Superclean, they're made by the same parent company. And yes both are sold at WalMart. SuperClean for around 7 bucks per gallon and Purple Powwe for around 4 per gallon. Look in the automotive section of walmart they are right next to each other.

Thanks, and, as I said in the post above yours, I don't actually use the stuff because I can't stand the smell, but a friend of mine does. That might have been some of the confusion, too, because he uses the CSC, but he also refers to his "purple pond" as purple power.

:):D Thanks guys! Hm... At either $7.00 or $4.00 per gallon, it sure is affordable enough. I do real 1:1 car painting too and this stuff would likely be great for stripping small automotive parts.. Thanks for the information. We checked at our local Wal Mart but we looked in the household cleaners and not in the automotive. I'll check there the next time I am in Penticton. Sounds like it may be as bad as Easy Off for fumes but it works out a lot cheaper. What's the shelf life of the product once the bottle is opened? Any ideas? :D

I honestly have never noticed fumes from the purple pond (by either name). One thing to keep in mind it is not very effective on the OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLD Testors model paints (50's 60's era as they contained lead and are very stubborn to remove. I am dealing with this right now and may have to resort to easy-off anyway.

Second DO NOT USE CSC/PURPLE POWER ON METAL OR STORE IT IN A METAL CONTAINER!!!!

CSC and Purple Power react with metal. That's likely the "smell" people are talking about. I've noticed a pronounced unpleasant smell(and the stuff nearly come to a boil) when a model body I dunked in CSC turned out to have diecast metal parts glued to it, and they were left to soak in CSC. It smelled AWFUL.

Thanks for the info, Mark. As I said in my reply you quoted, my friend does have his "purple pond" in an old pot, and that pot is metal! That would explain a lot. I use plastic Rubbermade containers for my brake fuild stripper I often call "Lake Brake", and have had the brake fluid in one of them for almost three years now. Could I do the same with CSC or Purple Power? I have wanted to use either, because I know it does a super job compaired to brake fluid, but have always been discouraged from using it because of the smell of my friends "purple pond".

You could easily do the same with a container that had a snap-on lid.

That's the type I have my brake fluid in now, the shoebox type size with the snap on lid. Thanks for the info again, Mark. I just might have to start using CSC.

I don't know if you have an Auto Zone in your area. They had it on sale a few months ago, they still carry it.

I know for sure you can get it at auto zone, probably even oreileys. If you are simply removing a part from the "pond" very quickly you dont *have* to wear gloves, but if you plan on cleaning parts off or scrubbing BE SURE to wear gloves, it will leave your hands very oily at first followed by VERY dry and then your skin will peel off! BTDT save yourself the discomfort and use gloves.

Doesn't work as well as super clean.I tried it on a model body and it didn't touch the paint at all.then I tried to strip some chrome off some parts and it couldn't even do that,so it's up to you.It does clean mildew off of shower doors tho.Buy some super clean.

SO is super clean a different product again and if so - who carries it? I have to ask because I was looking for Purple Power in the house cleaning section of Walmart - never thought tolook in the automotive section.. I'll try them both..

Castrol Super Clean, or Super Clean, or CSC is the same product, it just depends on what the individual calls it. The PROPER name of the product is Castrol Super Clean, and you should be able to find it at any well stocked auto parts store or in the automotive section of Walmart.

Purple Power, as a few others have explained already, is a generic brand and is a different product than Castrol Super Clean. While from what I have picked up from this thread, it will do the same job as the Castrol Super Clean, but may not do it as well as the CSC. I think someone even mentioned you will find the Castrol Super Clean and the Purple Power sitting side by side in the automotive section of Walmart.

Lowe's and Home Depot both carry the Purple Power. I get mine at Lowe's because I work there. I have been using Purple Power for a number of years now and I haven't had any less results from that as I did with the regular Castrol Super Clean.
