GM Futureliner

Recommended Posts

Some of you may know Joel Dirnberger as he has attended GSLMCC a time or two. However, for those not so familiar with his work here is a link to Joel's really neat web site. Especially a look at his large-scale replica of the GM Futureliner which is totally scratch built.

What a masterpiece!

That model is very cool, I've seen it years ago at Toledo on the primer table. He's done more w/it since I last saw it. I wish he'd get it finished! That page was last updated in '03, and he said that it would eventually be available in resin. Joel seems to be AWOL from the modeling community; guess life got in the way.

I saw the NATMUS Futureliner at Amelia Island this year, it's a neat vehicle especially up close. Joel helped the NATMUS guys w/the restoration w/some of the information he had gathered to build his model.

WOW! Come to think of it, I was wondering where the guys who drew the vehicle for the "Batman" cartoons got their insperation for the medium and heavy duty delivery vehicles.

Ahhh..a Paul Dini fan....I have to think the Batman police vehicles were GM Futureliner clones!

I saw that at Toledo a few years ago and it was extremely impressive then...now it's even more so! The Futureliner has to be the most awesome model I have ever seen anywhere! This is one model that deserves to be documented for the masses to see. I await the finished replica however long it takes. Excellence has no time limit.

Congratulations to JoelDirn on the tremendous model he's created so far. The details are amazing!

For the Group25 Model Car Club's theme, GM's 100th Anniversary, I am toying with the idea of making my own 1/25 scale Futurliner. I have collected pics and such, and printed them to scale, but still need to find out a few details, like the front and rear shapes as seen from above. I'm sure there will be more questions as the work progresses. I enjoy vacuforming and will be making a series of wooden forms to shape heated plastic sheet over, making a series of sub-assemblies roughly corresponding to the opening features of the Futurliner.

For now, I need to know if the front and rear bumpers are semi-circular or just have a pronounced curve. I can't see a way to determine these shapes from pics I've seen so far. If anyone has any pics or ideas that might help, i"m all ears.

Below is a pic of some of my 1/25 scratchbuilt projects, not very detailed but curbside shelf models (I guess they're just detailed enough to make them recognizable for what they are...)
