Cannonball Run 2015 " The Sleeperball"

Well folks, it's that time of year again. The 2014 CBP has just wrapped up and we had a record number of racers at the finish line this year. We had 35 entrants and 5(?) finished entries.

This year after deliberating with our previous hosts, we came up with the decision to do a Themed build this year.

The Theme this year is "Sleepers "

No, this won't be our last, and it wasn't Brock Yates last, it was the last Sea to Shining Sea memorial cup dash, basically meaning a cross country point A to B type race. After that the race was the "Cannonball One Lap of America" race in which the race became more of a Rally.

post-2135-0-65066700-1419534248_thumb.jp

So, this year all entries must be a sleeper.

1. Take a car that is not normally considered fast. Make it fast without altering its appearance that might let on that it's fast.

2. If the car IS normally thought of as fast, it should be in such poor condition/appearance, that no one would give it a second glance.

There is no limit on, year/make or model, as long as it meets the above criteria.

The subject must appear to NOT be capable of running such a race. Sky is the limit on imagination. HOWEVER this time we won't be limited the parts used on the racer to this year, so feel free to use those modern drivetrains and rolling stock.

As with every year, Official start date will be January 1st 2015, and the end date will be December 1st 2015.

"I'd like to welcome you all to an event that's sometimes been called the Automotive counterpart to the Bay of Pigs."

"You are certainly the most distinguished group of highway scofflaws and degenerates ever gathered together in one place"

"Of course you know certain skeptics note that perhaps 10,000 of the nation's most elite highway patrolmen are out there waiting for us after we start, but let's stay positively: Think of the fact that there's not one state in the 50 that has the death penalty for speeding... although I'm not so sure about Ohio."

Now before we get going we need to remember that your vehicle will have to follow a few guidelines.

Remember we are racing on City, County, and State Roads and Streets, so we need to be "Street Legal"

Now the Rules Rules:

1.) First rule, as per Rob (Jantrix), this is all about having fun.

2.) You must show a picture of the kit, collection of parts, or re-builder that you are starting with. If it is possible try to post at least 1 update per month even if it just says "I haven't finished any work, but I'm still here..."

3.) On December 1, 2015 I will start a new thread in the "Under Glass" section for everyone to post their finished entry's, you must post their to be included in the voting.

4.) Multiple entries are allowed.

So guys and gals, Have Fun and we'll see you in Redondo Beach!

Count me in with Small Block Chevy Powered Trabant.

First I thought about building a '57 Chevy in a bit rusty & crusty condition, but I thought that it wouldn't fool everyone. So what would be better than really slow, smoking, two stroke engine powered Trabant, I thought and decided that I'm going to install a Small Block Chevy under the hood. It will have a single turbo setup.

Well those are some mighty fine ideas.

Let me just take a moment to add some thoughts on this years theme.

If the car IS normally thought of as fast, it should be in such poor condition/appearance, that no one would give it a second glance.

In my opinion, this should be your last resort. Lets face it a faded '68 Charger with dog dish hubcaps isn't gonna fool anyone. Same goes for Camaros, Challengers, GTOs, Mustangs, etc etc. You are gonna really have to pull out all the stops if you are going to try one of these. Think about the Joe Dirt Daytona. That is the level of trashiness your gonna have to reach to pull it off.

Having said all that, there are a LOT of options left. Frankly if the paint was old and faded with bad chrome, Erik's Riviera would have been a great sleeper. Same with Zenrat's Skyhawk. Lots of possibilities.

My recommendation is to do an Ebay search for a lot of the odd ball AMT and MPC offerings from the 60's and 70's and 80's.

He's my plan. Like I said, an oddball from AMT. I asked a friend if he had any Pacers in his collection for trade. He said he did. I was expecting the recently re-released Pacer X. Much to my surprise and happiness he showed up with a wagon. My plan is a retro-tuner. A twin turbo 2JZ powered AMC. I believe the kit depicts a 1977 model.

I´m in with something different:

1-vi.jpg

So this is HESS Training Van - a 1/25 scaled toy of 1978 GMC Motor Home.

It will receive Bridgestone Dualliers and steel wheels from Aoshima London Taxi:

5-vi.jpg

Interior and chassis will of course have to be scratchbuild with strenghtened front wheel drive system from Johan Oldsmobile Toronado.

As for an engine I was thinking something Nascar- big block, maybe with blower and nitrous.

So basically I will use only body, bumpers, grille and driving lights from this toy. Everything else will be scratchbuit in a spartan way in order to reduce weight.

Think of this as a Nascar styled motorhome that will look bone stock except mild lowering, steelies with dogdish hubcaps.

For those who are having problems with ideas here are some ideas I considered:

Spotlight hobbies has the Baretta for $20, which could be made into a nice sleeper.

There are pickups galore out there like the S10, Bronco, or Ram D50.

Police car kits are abundant and can be made into sleepers if you don't mind the extra doors.

Model Roundup has an '87 GNX for $16 that can be made to look like a Regal with the right massaging! Wow, I like that one myself.

I can imagine what's going under that thing!!

I was thinking about that but a GN instead; no flares and no fender vents. Does someone make a flat hood and some Buick wheel covers?

Alright, I've decided to jump in!

Count me in with a rusty '55 Chevy Stepside.

It's going to have thin tires all around (my favorite Firestone Supremes, should I manage it), nice rust holes, junk in the bed, dirty interior, rusty wheels.... And a blown 427 with dual velocity stacks, and two straightpipes our the back with a Cherry Bomb glasspack on each one! :D
