classic hauler with a 32 ford saltlake racer......

Recommended Posts

Your truck is an awesome choice for a hauler. It has a great period look.

By the way, this suspension is not rigid. The diagonal rod connects to a coil spring via bell-crank hidden inside the sheet metal. This helps clean up the air flow around the front end. Since the surface is relatively smooth, you'll find that most salt flats/dry lakes cars don't need much of a suspension. It's not uncommon for rear axles to be welded or bolted directly to the frame.

first wanted to do a ridged version like that but changed to springs when i was almost done

is there a time period when this type of suspension would be popular?

thanks

well to be hounest i cant tell you because i dont know , i'm not really an expert on all the details like that ....

i just love everything hotrod , dry lake racers , custom but since here in holland you dont have a lot of that ...:(:)

i just try to build stuff that looks good to me personally ..

also i have to be hounest i have not been building for years and years , and still learning new stuff :)

i'm now at the point i really want to pay more attention to details and make stuff look more functional ..

inspired by some awsome builds here

thnx and yes when i saw the kit i was like thats perfect , most of these kits are militairy versions and this is one of the few civil kits .. its a german truck from origine but the shape is just soo cool :)

and about the suspension i didnt know that .. i really have to take some time and look on the net and read up on some of that stuff ..

i read somewhere about ridgid suspension and found this pic and asumed it was ridged ...

always nice to learn new stuff :)

while the body drys and i think about cleaning the doors yes or no , i did some work on the truck

sanded away the wheel bolts and flattened the center hub .

then glued some wheel caps on the center

546872_215177205281864_1796320780_n.jpg

flattened it a bit and made center holes

overal idea

made the edges run over into the rim and made it one piece and sprayed it chrome , will give it a noce wash later on for depth

decided to make the main body a one piece and remove the doorlines , hinges and handles ..

first flattened everything rough

535609_215473891918862_1398519123_n.jpg

after bondo , sanding here is the wet primer , its now semi dry and i still have some minour work left

really not sure on the color , wanted to do it black so i could do some visible salt on the body..

now i'm not sure , i would even like the idea of doing the so cal color sceme ..

opinions on colors are more then welcome

You're really making me want to do another Blitz! Cool project.

thnx and i found your blitz on your website , looks the same as my sivil version :)

i understand you used the firetruck kit as base

atm i'm in doubt i looked at some awsome c.o.e hauler pics and they all have small size wheels on a big cab and chassis , tried that on my blitz and i must say it looked great ..

the flipside is i will loose the vintage looks and its more a custom truck then , and since i'm going for the dry lake racer / hauler theme i think i need to stick with the big wheels

547036_215552341911017_904387684_n.jpg

if i like it maybe i will keep the blue and combine it with a design in off-white ..

maybe some cool racenumbers / old skool scallops ..... and then clear coat it

hey thnx , well i dont know exactly how old the kit is (not a date to be found on pr in the kit both on the box and manual)

but its pretty old ..

i understand they are making them again so there are brand new kist again ..

i got mine of a guy who had it laying on a attic for many years :)/>

and yes i was thinking of making ramps and keep it very basic and simple ,

alos its a bit high woth teh chassis to make a bed that tilts and also time perioud wise would not fit..

just basic floow and maybe closed sides and ramps that slide under the floor

Great idea man and thanks for being my only fan we all do good stuff

thnx :)

and well i saw a nother reply in your thread :) so you now have 2 :)

i think its also just the fact that the pick-up section is much slower , reply wise then the general build section ..

i also feel it would be better to merge those sections together , but well they have decided to do separate section so thats fine , but seeing the active people in the normal workbench section , thats really way more active reply wise then the pick-up section..

its mostly a case of being patient and not everybody is a active replyer but vieuw wise its pretty good here and well a reply is nice buts its mainly fun to share your creations and see other peoples work ...

i love this forum and i'm glad i found it its everything i like and mostly hotrods , pick-ups , crazy creations , old stuff , old race stuff .. i just love to see all those models here :)

Man O man this is lookin good.

coolpics.gif

thnx :)

the paint was dry when i came home from work .. i just love the satin finish , i'm thinking of keeping it like this and not clear coat it ... hmm doubt .... with clear it would really shine and pop .. but like this for me its got a kind of more vintage feel ....

i was thinking on doing white on blue .. maybe old skool scallops on the sides ...

259906_215858568547061_1839026565_n.jpg

close up > smooth rear :) i will add a brake shute system on the back.. i need to do some recearch on what is the best to make and what to use

i foud these 2 on google yesterday - evening

one is a bit rough and the other more shine ...

when i saw the red one i was kind of like :( about the fact that i didnt have the stock ford grille anymore .. i used them all up :)

looks way better then my scratched grille ..

and tonights build session

first tried all the wheels on the truck , they still need a wash though

575101_215918228541095_1591079992_n.jpg

525754_215918248541093_2047338138_n.jpg

crappy pics but oh well

first made some rear frame rails , doing it this way because its easy and due to the smooth underside you woulkd not see a whole chassis if i made one

521579_215918275207757_1125938317_n.jpg

some sides to close it up

542721_215918291874422_1688203652_n.jpg

rear plating , need one more layer so its the same hight as the rest and i can close the seem and really make it one piece

483111_215918308541087_370461903_n.jpg

set the rear to roughly the ride hight and put a loose wheel in front

I love what your doing here Richard, what a cool combo. I really like the look of the 32 on the back on the first page but I think the salt lake racer on the back was the perfect choice. Can't wait to see where you take this, I love watching your build ups. Keep it going bud

well felt like building again today ... i'm feeling a bit better now , first the rough belly pan work i did a few days ago

405099_217661011700150_77555918_n.jpg

used old vw beetle hub caps from a incomplete 1/16 kit and removed the vw logos and painted them silver / chrome

63745_217661048366813_48875194_n.jpg

and now you see why i used the cobra wheels the caps fit in these perfect and still show a lip of the rim so i was able to color match that to the body

423139_217661061700145_1807060318_n.jpg

395061_217661088366809_1277211365_n.jpg

then i scewed up a bit last week at the rear and had to make somthing to cover my mistake .. i used rings and taillights for this

i have to undo the lights from paint and make them red .. did not want taillights but like said i had no choice

550929_217661095033475_33157541_n.jpg

assembly

546927_217661111700140_2061299552_n.jpg

looking at the semi shine i decided not to clear coat it , a deep shine would not fit this car imo

started teh detail work today

first painted the rollbar chrome

532277_217717688361149_134356222_n.jpg

red lenses and chrome bevels , pretty nervewrecking painting lol

536812_217717708361147_1571992739_n.jpg

then did the front suspension . rods and backside of the rims chrome

531093_217717741694477_788840903_n.jpg

hamdpainted the "window" frame and although it was a risk i was able to get a super tight line and shape

532328_217717758361142_1849648014_n.jpg

overall looks

29805_217717795027805_1183340138_n.jpg

i was pleased with the results but pretty static and plain , i wanted it to look like it did several runs on the salt ...

this is what the first set up is atm

dont mind the 22 i did that with black and painted the center with chrome , looked cool untill i touthed it b accident and tried

to clean it off , the paint was east but the back didnt want to work with me :)

so i redid the black but ruined the numbers and made them too thick.

also after the salt weathering it now looks stupid , the chrome inside of the numbers is now gone ..

so i will fic that later with something new

make it or break it >>

got rid of the ugly lettering by wet sanding it , then downtoned the white a bit ..

i would have been better of with a darker color now on the pics you cant see the salt effect real good , would have popped so much better on a dark color

382066_217793585020226_186428494_n.jpg

some decals , need some mild weathering later on

this is the part where the real weathering begins .. white arylic paint with superfine sanddust mixed ...

29538_218079841658267_1585065028_n.jpg

the bellypan , did that darl with salt .. wanted it to stick out and if it was light grey it didnt pop that good

561521_218079864991598_700233156_n.jpg

salt build up low on the sides

990_218079891658262_2116270690_n.jpg

198278_218079908324927_1053263357_n.jpg

painted the seatbelts , have to redo it with matt paint this was gloss and that looks weird , the chrome closing stuff (??) is scratch made

536769_218079921658259_1578972990_n.jpg

some outside pics where you see the difference between the blue and salt better

546853_218079931658258_353233235_n.jpg

188529_218079971658254_1353754568_n.jpg

i probable will make the truck into a shorter truck so i can hang a sort of flat / low trailer behind it with room for 2 cars ..

then i can add a future racer or mix and match ..

The racer looks great Richard, I'm too into shiny stuff to do any weathering, but maybe someday....

thnx and well i love shiney as well but weathering is jsut so much fun to do .. and also a challenge ..

for me it makes a model come to life really..

i knew this one had to be weathered because looking at older dry lake racers i just loved the used and dirty pics more then the clean ones
