Team Ireland Lumina Nascar Project

With Daytona right around the corner, I thought that I would try to wrap up this project. This is a box-stock build of the 1992 Team Ireland Lumina driven by Bobby Hillin Jr using Mooseworks decals. I had hoped to have it up on all 4 wheels by this time but broke the front suspension trying to tweak the stance! These cars sit way to high when built out of the box IMHO. Anyways, I have a replacement in process from the parts box.... I still have some polishing to do but have started decaling the hood. The Lumina insignia on the nose was accomplished by filling the recesses with paint, before clear coating. This is my 4th build since returning to the hobby so any pointers, tips or advice are welcome. I have additional pictures in my Fotki album at the link.

What kind of paint are you using for the body?

I really appreciate the response everybody! I built back in the late 80's early 90's, played with a Nascar kit around 2000 but did not get back to active building until about a year and a half ago. When I came back, I decided to focus on out of the box builds to get my skills back up. The paint work is my biggest challenge as I am still doing spray cans. I have an airbrush but am too lazy to clean it and mess with dialing it in. Since this was a black car, I decided to go with Duplicolor lacquer and their clear coat. I believe I will get a better polish/shine than I got on my Bruce Lee Taurus down in the Nascar section of the board. I did cheapo enamel on that one and had a bunch of issues to work through. Again, I really appreciate the feedback everybody!

I gotta tell ya, with the exception of R/M "kit" decals, these have to be the WORST decals I have ever used! I was uncertain when I started so I sprayed a couple coats of Testors decal clear. It didn't help, these things crack, splinter, disintegrate and chip like crazy. Be forewarned if you plan to do this one. Buy a couple sets of decals....

The rear panel was supposed to have a Dupont decal and a small shamrock... That shamrock broke into 50 pieces when it hit the water! I ended up pulling the Dupont off and substituted the bigger shamrock. The worst was the driver's side door #. That one broke in 6 pieces that I have attempted to piece back together!

I hate to do it but I will need to Future coat the entire body once I am finished decaling. These decals are so brittle I will need to do something to protect them. Anyways, we will get it there...with a little luck of the Irish! LOL!

Though that I would try to add a little visual interest to the grille on this one. I taped off and sprayed some faux grille bars and then weathered them in.

It looks like those decals are putting a whopen on you! Haha! That Dupli-color turned out real nice. Good luck with the rest of the build bro.

LOL! We finished the decals this evening...They are not perfect but it is what it is. Yes, I was really happy with the way the Black Dupli-color polished out. Now I have to put Future over it.... Anyways, it will be real shiny, LOL!

Hey, when are you going to finish up that Buckshot car?? I recently picked up a set of those decals after seeing yours.

Roland, I appreciate your comments as well!

I'm gona hang my head and pretend I didn't see your question. Haha! I got away from building for awhile there. I got back to building pretty regularly again at the first of the year and had other inspirations take over. Its sitting over in the corner on my to do list. Every time I see a post from you it reminds me to build it. Haha.

Well, I fought through it and finished the decals and sealed them in. I am pretty happy with the outcome, considering what I went through, LOL! I also finished up my replacement front suspension piece and got her up on all 4 wheels here this evening. I am not going to mess with the stance again as this one is an out-of-the-box build and it will be what it will be. I still have some finish work to do on the windows and the rear spoiler and I will be about done with this project! I really appreciate all the kind words and encouragement!
