does enamel primer work under lacquer paint?

I can't remember where I read or heard this, but I have heard that if you primer a body with enamel and then paint lacquer over it, it will bubble up and destroy the painjob. Is that true? (if so, its back to walmart for brake fluid)

From my experience, it will usually lead to a brake fluid bath.

You might be able to get away with dusting the paint on in a whole bunch of really light, dry coats though. Not sure on that one.

I usually try to match the paint and primer types.

Yes, definitely practice on something other than the body. Some lacquers are so "hot" that they will make the plastic look like stucco. Brake fluid aint gonna do the trick on something like that.

Plastic spoons work great for this. You can buy a box of 100 for a couple of bucks. I have a whole assortment of spoons with all different colors for reference. Just write on the handle what kind of primer, paint and (if used) clear you used on it.

Ive learned a valuable lesson on primer. Ive been using Duplicolor t-99 primer under House of Kolor paints. Its worked fine and I really didn't see a problem. I switched clears and started using urethane clear and noticed that the HoK was separating from the primer and coming off in sheets. I believe this was always happening but since HoK is so thin it didn't sheet off like it does with urethane. I just bought a can of U-Pol High build lacquer primer through the advice of the local PPG tech guy. I'm going try it on a junk body and make sure it doesn't attack the plastic......

I guess I forgot to say what kind of paints/primers I will be using. I sprayed rustoleum white enamel primer as a base coat, and, PLAN on using model masters Hemi Orange paint as a top coat. I have not sprayed the Orange yet. I think I can still use brake fluid and get the primer off. I tried last time with 91% alcohol and it didn't work at all. I gotta go with something stronger

For stripping the primer and paint, try using Easy Off Oven Cleaner in the spray can. I have had success with removing real 1:1 automotive paints with it but it takes more time and work then removing regular sprat bomb paints.

I have used regular automotive laquer primers on many models and painted enamels over top with no issues at all. Also, putting laquer over an enamel primer should not be a problem if as said earlier, you mist the paint on lightly for the first several coats and allow lots of time ( I wait over night ) between coats for the solvents to evacuate. If you just spray a heavy coat of laquer over the enamel primer, then the solvents in the laquer will attack the enamel and you have problems. They key is to allow the solvents lots of time to come out of the paint using light coats.
