My goal was to build the 8 Compact Class cars that raced at Daytona in the 1960-2 seasons. Many folks never heard of this racing series, the only decal set was for the Marvin Panch car, and you could piece together the Lee and Richard Petty cars from other sheets. I never could find decent photos of the rest of the cars, never mind color! So I never did the project. I've since seen builts of all three of the above cars. I build one as a yellow kustom show truck with the kit stock canted headlights, and one as a beater. Those two projects sold me on the versatility of this kit. I was mesmerized by the torch and tool set as a junior higher when I bought my first one.The step side bed was used for the next four generations of these trucks, so I wanted to have a few extras around. Carmak Posted November 8, 2016 Share Posted November 8, 2016 My spin on this would be the most of the same kit I ever bought at once. Back in the 90's I bought a 12 kit case of the MPC 69 442 kit. I was at the old Ertl outlet store and a worker came out with the case which was ripped open at one end. I asked if they would sell the whole case. Yep, $6 for the case as is. As I wanted them for the chassis I was not concerned about the case being ripped open (turned out none of the plastic was damaged).I sure do miss the Ertl outlet store. I've done several scratch built bodies off this kit and I could continue onward just as various custom cab builders did in the day with the real ones . Mark Posted November 8, 2016 Share Posted November 8, 2016 In the early days of eBay (1999-2000 for me) I bought a case of 12 Jo-Han '69 "pro street box" SC/Ramblers. It was a screaming deal even then, I think the whole thing was under $50 with the shipping. Nobody else bid on them. Sold off four or five of them for $15-$20 apiece shortly afterwards which means the ones I kept didn't cost me anything. I had three or four of them prior to that, so I was still right around a dozen "in stock". Later I found a couple of very early SC kits with wire axles and $2.00 price suffix on the box (didn't know any were made like that) so of course I had to have those. Probably closer to two dozen, and might be on the far side of that. I’ve actually built two of the Revell ‘69s and three of the AMT ‘68s. Have also built five MPC '69s--six if you count the Harrell funny car.Expanding a bit to a kit family, I’d have to say AMT ’63-’67 Corvettes, both coupes and roadsters. I recently tried to do an inventory of the original annual "projects" I’ve rescued from eBay and it was somewhere around two dozen, and then I have at least another dozen reissue ‘63s—both coupe and roadster—for parts and organ donors. At the moment, I have about 10 C2 Corvettes actually built—3 AMTs, 4 Revell snappers, 1 MPC, 1 Revell full kit, and a couple diecasts. It was back in 1988 when a drug store Wholesaler in Harrisburg NC went out of business. I went to the close out sale and saw the kits offered for $3 each....still a good deal. I asked for a discount if I bought the whole case of 12 they had open and was offered all they had at $1 each.......if I bought all 900. I bought them all. I needed help just moving them so I called my buddy that owned a hobby shop and had a truck. We ended up spiting the 900 into 3 loads of 300 each. I got 300, he bought 300 and the hobby shop got 300. Same with the old AMT '32 Ford roadster. Multiples of all the Revell '32 Fords, and the recent '29 and '30 kits. Dozens of parts-pack engine kits too. And I think 5 of the Revell '50 Olds kits, the old Revell multi-piece Corvettes, and the Revell Sting Ray III show car. Oh yeah...5 of the Revell 1/8 Big Deuce kits too. Those early Monogram NASCAR kits have really come down in price recently. More recent ones have dropped like a stone, but the early ones were still good. I picked up one of the first two Buick Regals, and (I believe) the second version Elliott Thunderbird (the one with the Coors markings), sealed, for single-digit prices. I'm not that much into NASCAR (do have a few kits; I bought ones that looked interesting) but when you can pick up the earliest kits in a groundbreaking, long-running series for cheap, I figured why not.Same goes for the early Monogram Pro Stock kits. The reissue of the Reher-Morrison-Shepherd Camaro a couple of years ago brought the price of originals down. I had all four of the original kits on my sale pile, couldn't sell them so I figure I'll keep them instead of giving them away.
